Osaka Mayor's Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC)

To hear an update regarding the Osaka Station North District Development Project, I attended the most recent Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC) meeting at Umeda Sky Building last month. With the first phase of the project spanning 7 hectares (17 acres) expected to be completed and made available to the public in Spring of 2013 and the second phase of 17 hectares (42 acres) slated for completion in 2019, there is a lot of buzz in the community as to how the massive land area will be developed.

In particular, phase one is expected to be comprised of office space, hotels, serviced apartments and condominiums with InterContinental Hotel set to occupy some space.

To promote the advancement of collaboration between the world of business and academia, Osaka City will allocate space within the Knowledge Capital area (tentatively labeled Osaka Open Innovation Village) for the two worlds to share ideas and harvest relationships focusing mainly on robot technology, green technology and healthcare and preventative medicine.

With the Kansai region of Japan encompassing a GDP equivalent to the seventh largest in the world, Osaka and the rest of the area are aiming to be #1 in Asia for green and life innovation.

みなさん、 大阪駅北地区先行開発区域プロジェクトをご存知ですか？

先月、大阪駅北地区先行開発区域プロジェクトに関する情報をアップデートしようと、梅田スカイビルでの Foreign Business Networking Club（FBNC）会議に出席しました。

構想の第1期として、2013年9月に7ヘクタールが一般オープンされ、第2期として2019年に17ヘクタールの完成が予定されています。この広大な土地の開発には多くの反響があるようです。

特に開発の第1期地区は、インターコンチネンタルホテルを含む、オフィス、ホテル、マンション、コンドミニアムなどの建設が予定されています。

大阪市はナレッジキャピタルの地区（現在 Osaka Open Innovation Village（仮）と呼ばれています）を 企業と教育機関の連携強化のために活用することを視野に入れており、ロボット工学や環境問題への取り組み、ヘルスケアや予防薬について両機関でアイデアを共有し交流を深めることが期待されています。

世界で第７位となるGDPを誇る関西地区は、アジアで環境・生活革新において第一位を目指しています。今回のプロジェクトも、関西地区のさらなる発展に貢献することでしょう。

Osaka Mayor's Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC)

As seen in the picture above, I participated in the Mayor's Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC) on September 10 at the Mayor's Mansion in Osaka.  After hearing remarks from Kunio Hiramatsu, the mayor of Osaka, two presentations were given on the topic of "water" by the Osaka Municipal Waterworks Bureau and also by NITTO DENKO CORPORATION.

After being educated on the water distribution system in the city and also informed about the overseas operations of the waterworks bureau in Vietnam, Singapore, and China, a representative from NITTO DENKO took over the floor to highlight the company's water treatment successes in India, Spain, Algeria, Australia, China and Singapore.

With Osaka trying to brand itself as a "water metropolis" city, it was nice to hear how the public and private sector are working to expand Osaka's water technology reach in the world.

上記の写真にありますように、 9月10日に市長公館で行われたMayor's Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC)に出席してきました。平松市長のあいさつに続き、「水」に関するプレゼンテーションがふたつ行われました。 

まずは大阪市水道局の方より、大阪市の配水システム、またベトナムやシンガポール、中国での活動についての説明がありました。次に、インドやスペイン、アルジェリア、オーストラリア、中国、そしてシンガポールでも実績を上げている日東電工株式会社の方により水処理に関するプレゼンテーションが行われました。

大阪が大阪を「水都」とし盛り上げて行くにあたり、公共機関と民間企業がどのように技術を発達させ、世界に発信していくかをとても興味深く聞くことができました。

As written above in the picture, I attended the latest installment of the Osaka Mayor's Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC) on February 4 at the Mayor's Mansion. The participants broke out into two groups to discuss at length the issues facing the city of Osaka in making it attractive to foreigners and foreign businesses. After the conclusion of the "break-out" sessions, all participants gathered in the same room with Mayor Hiramatsu to hear each group's summary and receive feedback directly from the mayor. Having the international community's voice heard is definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully more fruitful meetings will be planned and actions taken as a result.

上記の写真にございますように、私は2月4日に市長公館で行なわれたOsaka Mayor's Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC)の最新回の会合に出席して参りました。参加者は2つのグループに分かれて、大阪市が外国人並びに外国企業にとって魅力的な市にしようとするにあたって直面している問題について、時間をかけて討議しました。「同時進行」セッションの閉会後、全参加者が平松市長と同室に集合し、各グループの概略を拝聴し、市長からその概略について直接フィードバックを受けました。国際コミュニティーの意見に耳を傾けることは、必ずや正しい方向への手段となります。さらなる実り多き会議が計画され、結果としてそれが実行されることを期待します。

As it is stated in the picture, I attended the Osaka Mayor's Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC) on the Captain Line boat for an excursion to Yumeshima, Tsuruhama, and Hirabayashi in Osaka bay on September 2. After receiving opening remarks from Mayor Hiramatsu and a presentation on what development is in store for the bay of Osaka in the upcoming years, participants networked with each other on the upper deck of the boat while being surrounded by the picturesque shoreline.

ご覧の写真にありますように、9月2日はキャプテンラインボートで大阪湾の夢州、咲州、平林の周遊旅行というForeign Business Networking Club (FBNC) に参加してきました。平松市長の開会の辞と大阪湾の近未来的な開発計画についてのプレゼンテーションのあと、絵のように美しい海岸線に囲まれながら上のデッキに出て、参加者による名刺交換が行なわれました。

Osaka Bay Cruise 大阪ベイクルーズ

Yesterday I attended the Foreign Business Networking Club's cruise around Osaka Bay with about another 40 executives and diplomats from the Kansai region. Taking the Captain Line boat from the Universal City Port, which is located next to Universal Studios Japan (USJ), we enjoyed a 90 minute cruise around some of the up-and-coming industrial areas of Osaka on a magnificent day. With opening remarks made by the Mayor of Osaka, Kunio Hiramatsu (in the middle of the first picture), I was kept informed of future developments to the port area of Osaka. After we arrived back at the Universal City Port, I was interviewed on camera by K-CAT Cable TV. Unfortunately, I don't have any footage on me at the moment; however if I can get my hands on some, I will upload it here.

昨日、関西在住の40人の企業の重役や外交官とともにForeign Business Networking Clubのクルーズに参加していました。ユニバーサル・スタジオ・ジャパン（USJ)に隣接しているユニバーサルポートからキャプテンラインボートに乗り、大阪の有望株であるいくつかの地域まわりを見学しながら90分クルーズを満喫し、すばらしい日となりました。平松邦夫大阪市長（一番上の写真の中央）の開会宣言によって始まり、大阪の湾岸エリアについてのプレゼンテーションを聞くことができました。ユニバーサルシティーポートに帰港した際、関西電力、京阪電気鉄道系のケーブルテレビ局であるケイ・キャット ケーブルテレビ（K-CAT）にカメラインタビューを受けました。残念ながら、そのときの画像がまったく手元にないのですが、実物を手にいれたら、ブログにアップしますのでチェックしてくださいね。

As it is stated in the picture, I attended the Mayor's Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC) at the Mayor's Mansion in Miyakojima-ku, Osaka on July 1 to attend presentations from two Osaka-based companies on their current economic status and projections for the future.
