If It's the Weekend, then It Must Be Party Time in Osaka!

Like to party?

Want to meet some new friends in Kansai?

Don't have a plan for the weekend?

If you answered "yes" to the above and if you live close to Osaka, Kyoto or Kobe, listen up!

There are plenty of social mixers happening every Friday, Saturday and Sunday somewhere close to you.  Now some of the sites that I've mentioned below are only in Japanese, so if you're Japanese skills need some brushing up, better to get a friend to assist you before you miss your chance at a great night out!

Without wasting any more of your precious time, here is a comprehensive list for you to research.

ICE BREAK

ICE BREAK is run by yours truly.  With that said, the site is predominantly in Japanese but if you have any questions, you can always direct them to me for answers.  If you're looking to meeting mainly Japanese in and around the Kansai area, the parties (held in Osaka, Kyoto & Kobe) listed on ICE BREAK are a good place to start.

Royal Linkage

Royal Linkage is run by a Japanese friend of mine who's been in the party organizing business for more than 10 years.  With a wealth of experience, you can be sure that the parties hosted by Royal Linkage will be enjoyable.  The downside with Royal Linkage is that the site is in Japanese only, however with that said, the parties tend to be attended by mainly Japanese so if you are looking for some Japanese friends, check out one of Royal Linkage's parties in Osaka.

Furtherment of International Friendship Organization (FIFO) - Osaka

FIFO is a recent newcomer to the "international party" circuit.  As I haven't been to one of their parties before I can't give you a first-hand point-of-view but they may be worth checking out if you are looking for a more "international" feel of an event.

WhyNot!?

When it comes to international parties in Kansai, WhyNot!? is where it's at!  They've been around the block several times having been in business for around 8 years, which is quite significant in the party industry here in Kansai.  Plus I know the sisters who are behind the WhyNot!? brand.  Very bright they are indeed.  Even though I have not been to a WhyNot!? party in several years, their events tend to be well attended.  If you're in your 20s then for sure WhyNot!? would be a good place to start as their guests consist of university students, graduate students and company employees early in their careers.

iNetwork Japan

Another international party organization that has been around for several years, iNetwork Japan holds various types of events in Osaka and Kyoto for most of the year.  Even though I haven't attended one of their events, my friend is the brains behind iNetwork Japan, so I would definitely give them a look if your schedule fits with one of their events.  In terms of price, iNetwork Japan in general is probably the least expensive so if you don't want to spend too much money the first time out, they may be the best option for you.

So next time you're looking for some "fun" on the weekend, I definitely recommend that you check out the sites I've listed above for details.

Until next time, have a great weekend!

World Forum for Bio/Medical Device in Kansai 2011

Organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry (METI - Kansai) and the Osaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (OCCI), the World Forum for Bio/Medical Device is back in Kansai for 2011.

Taking place the week of February 21-25, the first day will include a site visit in Osaka followed by two days of company presentations and panel discussions before the forum moves to Kobe and then Kyoto to round out the week.

Dedicated to promoting the development of innovative medical, diagnostic and analytic devices and businesses, the World Forum for Bio/Medical Device brings the foreign industry leaders together for a week to exchange their recent findings with the Japanese bio/medical device community.  This year representatives from the following overseas locations will be on hand to participate:

Assistive Medical Equipment Corp. (Illinois)
BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota
Boston Scientific Corporation (Massachusetts)
Brown Medical Industries (Iowa)
Devicix (Minnesota)
Fredrikson & Byron Attorneys (Minnesota)
Gnarus Medical Consulting (Minnesota)
Johnson Matthey Medical (Pennsylvania)
Lake Region Medical (Minnesota)

Invetech (Melbourne, Australia)

Burster (Germany)
Contec GmbH (Germany)

Philips Electronics (The Netherlands)

For more information about the forum, please click here for details in English and Japanese.

As one of the core industries in Kansai, the region is making headway towards becoming the place in Asia for one's bio/medical device needs.  It will be interesting as to what affect the forum has on the community here in Kansai.

Can Daikin Dethrone the HVAC King?

Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning.  Also known as HVAC, its what most of us in the 21st Century cannot live without.

And soon to dethrone the market leader Carrier, a United Technologies Company hailing from Connecticut, is none other than Osaka-based Daikin Industries.

Originally formed in 1924, Daikin has always been a step ahead of the rest when it comes to air conditioning systems.  From its days of installing ventilation systems on submarines used during World War II, the company controls its own destiny in the commercial market and holds the second spot nationally to Panasonic for the residential market nowadays.

Seeing the need to expand internationally, Daikin established its European office in Belgium back in 1972 and now has representative offices in 26 countries situated around the globe, which has led the company to achieving its number two position globally.

Now with the number one position within its grasp, rumors have been flying around that Daikin is a possible suitor to takeover Goodman Global, which is the second largest HVAC manufacturer in the U.S.

With all this attention being placed on the industry, it will be interesting to see how this situation "heats" up.

CNN Business Traveller - Osaka Edition CNN

What's business like for a foreigner in Osaka?  How can a business traveller survive in the city on a budget of less than $200 per day?

In the highly recommended videos featured above, CNN's own Richard Quest finds out the answers to the these questions and more during his 2009 visit to Osaka for CNN Business Traveller.

In the first video at the 4:15 mark, two very good friends of mine, Garr Reynolds and Paul Dupuis, sit down to have lunch with Richard and explain proper business protocol and customs.

In the second video clip, Richard speaks with the former mayor of Osaka, Mayor Seki, regarding what city government sponsored incentives are in place to attract more foreign businesses to the region.

Following his meeting with the mayor, Richard sat down to chat with Joshua Flannery (another business colleague of mine), who was a direct recipient of said incentives made available by the city, to hear first-hand how the city's support assisted him when he was setting up his operations.

I am not denying that Osaka, and most of Japan for that matter, is expensive.  If you are not careful, daily expenses will grow exponentially.  However Richard's piece illustrating how one can move around the city on a tight budget shows that anything is possible.  What it comes down to is having access to the right information.

Mizuno: 105 Years Down and Many More To Go!

Just like ASICS, Mizuno Corporation is another sports equipment and sportswear company that did not register on my radar as a Japan-based company until after I came here.  Originally established in 1906 by founder Rihachi Mizuno in Osaka, Mizuno Corporation is the choice of many like Ichiro Suzuki in the baseball world and used to be the golf club of choice for Tiger Woods during his collegiate career at Stanford and after turning pro before eventually switching to Nike.  To view the entire list of individuals/teams sponsored by Mizuno, click here.

Even though the company was established more than 100 years ago, it was not until 1980 that Mizuno entered the American market.  With its U.S. headquarters situated in Norcross, Georgia, a suburb located 32 km (20 miles) to the northeast of Atlanta, Mizuno has gone on to set up offices in Canada, United Kingdom, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China to showcase its products for sports enthusiasts of running, track and field, volleyball, baseball, softball, and golf.

As a strong supporter of the Olympics since 1924, Mizuno is committed to contributing to society through the advancement of sporting goods and the promotion of sports, and with 105 years of experience under its belt, the company is positioning itself to continue its mission into the next century.

Kansai - The Real Japan? You Be The Judge.

For most people residing outside of Japan, Kyoto and Tokyo are the cities that are most familiar followed by Osaka, Hiroshima, etc.  However, what about "Kansai"?  When I first visited Osaka (the second largest city in Japan) 10 years ago, my plane did not land at Osaka Airport as I thought it would but rather at Kansai International Airport.  Was Kansai another way to say Osaka?

I soon came to realize that Kansai was the name for the region that includes the ancient capital cities of Nara and Kyoto along with Osaka, the port city of Kobe (also where Kobe beef originated), and the largest lake in Japan - Lake Biwa in Shiga.  Geographic details about this region are depicted in the pictures above.

With Tokyo being the present-day capital of Japan, it is understandable why it gets all the attention, however Kansai has a lot going for it as a region and offers a different lifestyle than what one can find in the metropolitan city of Tokyo, which makes Kansai attractive.

Having previously lived in Tokyo to experience the city first-hand, it is safe to say that I am biased when it comes to talking about Kansai.  After living in Tokyo, I moved to Kansai and have never looked back since.  Tokyo is comparable to any large metropolitan city in the world. Even though most of the people living in Tokyo are Japanese (as they are anywhere else in this country), the city doesn't have much of a "Japanese" feel to it.  Just more of a "big city" feel.

Kansai on the other hand does maintain its sense of "Japanese".  Being home to two of the former capitals (Nara & Kyoto) and the merchant capital of Osaka, the region is where Japan got started years ago and even with the passage of time, the region has maintained a great balance of the old with the new to please the masses.

Also based on the statistics above, the region has a population equivalent to that of Australia and an economy ranked in the top 20 in the world annually.  As a place to visit or possibly conduct business, I cannot say enough positive things about the region.

Unfortunately current mass media places too much attention on Tokyo as a destination.  Even most tours aimed at Westerners are Tokyo-based occasionally offering a side trip to Kyoto.  It makes sense though as those are the only two cities that ever get mentioned in mainstream media, however coming all the way to Kyoto from Tokyo (two hours by bullet train) and then not stopping by Osaka, Nara, etc., which are just 30 minutes by local train from Kyoto, does not make much sense to me.  Realizing that the travel itineraries are very tight as they are, it would make more sense to split the time in Tokyo and Kansai equally so that visitors can experience as much of Kansai as possible within their allotted time rather than 1-2 days only in Kyoto as is the norm.

To sum everything up, when looking to experience the "real" Japan, schedule a trip to Kansai and see for yourself what this great region has to offer.  In the end, only you can be the judge.

Finally, for a great resource on the hot spots ranked by foreigners residing in the area in English and Japanese, please on click on "Destination KANSAI" for more information.

MIKI HOUSE: Osaka Fashion For Your Little One

Happy New Year everyone!

As it is the birth of a new year, fittingly today's blog entry is about a company that knows the baby industry like none other - MIKI HOUSE.

Established in 1978 in Osaka, MIKI HOUSE has been making in roads in children's fashion for more than 30 years. The company's founder and current CEO, Koichi Kimura, started the business when he was just 26 years of age.  Seeing an opportunity to satisfy the needs of young parents who wanted fashionable clothes for their children, Mr. Kimura put the wheels in motion to create stylish but at the same time quality children's apparel.

What started out as just one brand has now blossomed to five (outlined below).

- MIKI HOUSE (casual line for boys and girls ages 6 months to 9 years)
- MIKI HOUSE FIRST (line for babies and infants from newborn to 12 months)
- MIKI HOUSE DOUBLE B (American casual denim line for boys and girls ages 6 months to 9 years)
- MIKI HOUSE HOT BISCUITS (colorful line for boys and girls ages 6 months to 5 years)
- MIKI HOUSE COLLECTION (formal line for boys and girls ages 2 to 9 years)

Wanting not to be known as just a children's apparel manufacturer, Mr. Kimura has since expanded the company's offerings to total baby care, publishing, and child-rearing while setting up operations in nine countries globally.

In addition to its focus on improving the lives of children, MIKI HOUSE is a proud sponsor of Japanese olympic athletes.  The past the company has supported athletes in swimming, judo, synchronized swimming, table tennis, tennis, and baton twirling.

MIKI HOUSE is just another example of an Osaka-based company trying to improve the lives of those around us.

Capcom is to Osaka as Nintendo is to Kyoto

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Nintendo and its contribution to the Kansai economy.  Today I will highlight another video game developer heavyweight in Capcom, which brought us such famous titles like Street Fighter, Mega Man and Resident Evil over the years.

Located about one minute away from my office in Osaka by walking sits the headquarters of the video game juggernaut Capcom.  Established in 1983, Capcom wasted little time in expanding its operations globally by setting up its American headquarters in San Mateo, California in 1985.  Now with branches and subsidiaries in 8 countries spanning the globe, the company is well positioned to make its presence known as it expands into new markets.

Having launched its own mobile device focused site where users can download games for their cell phones (in addition to having certain titles available on the App Store), Capcom is showing that it is a company of the times and clearly focused on the next generation of gamers.

Saito Life Science Park

Where is one likely to find the best rated biotech cluster in Japan?  Well, you don't need to look any further than Saito Life Science Park in Osaka Prefecture.

Twenty years in the making, Saito Life Science Park, which is located 18 km (11 miles) to the north of downtown Osaka, officially opened in April of 2004.  Occupied by world-class facilities such as Osaka University, the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center, and the Osaka Bioscience Institute, and called home by more than 1,100 researchers, Saito Life Science Park is aiming to become the hub of the Northern Osaka bio-medical cluster.  With the likes of AnGes MG, Kringle Pharma, and GeneDesign representing some of the 20 companies having taken up residence in the Saito Bio Incubator, the life science park seems to be well on its way to cementing its position as the location of choice.

With more than 300 pharmaceutical companies established in Osaka, the city and prefecture are focusing on developing the life science and biotech industries, which is definitely music to the Saito Life Science Park's ears.  Having earned a reputation for manufacturing, Osaka is now looking towards the future - a future with life science and biotech in mind, and the Saito Life Science Park will be there every step of the way.

Osaka Mayor's Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC)

To hear an update regarding the Osaka Station North District Development Project, I attended the most recent Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC) meeting at Umeda Sky Building last month. With the first phase of the project spanning 7 hectares (17 acres) expected to be completed and made available to the public in Spring of 2013 and the second phase of 17 hectares (42 acres) slated for completion in 2019, there is a lot of buzz in the community as to how the massive land area will be developed.

In particular, phase one is expected to be comprised of office space, hotels, serviced apartments and condominiums with InterContinental Hotel set to occupy some space.

To promote the advancement of collaboration between the world of business and academia, Osaka City will allocate space within the Knowledge Capital area (tentatively labeled Osaka Open Innovation Village) for the two worlds to share ideas and harvest relationships focusing mainly on robot technology, green technology and healthcare and preventative medicine.

With the Kansai region of Japan encompassing a GDP equivalent to the seventh largest in the world, Osaka and the rest of the area are aiming to be #1 in Asia for green and life innovation.

For the second time this year, I attended the ANA Crowne Plaza Osaka's VIP Customer Event Party held on Friday, November 5.  To mix things up, the party was held on the 5th floor terrace as opposed to one of the hotel's many banquet rooms.  Showcasing all of the restaurants at the hotel, I was able to sample everything from steak to seafood to pasta to dessert.  Hands down, the hotel's roast beef took top prize in my opinion.

With a three piece jazz band creating the ambience, the hotel did an outstanding job in hosting the party from a presentation and taste standpoint.  With the next party planned for February, I am looking forward to seeing how the hotel can outdo this one.

Conveniently located within walking distance from Osaka Station, the ANA Crowne Plaza Osaka is one hotel that should not be overlooked when planning to spend the night in the city or go out for a great bite to eat.

Cruising Around Osaka on the Ofune-Camome

To take in the night landscape of Osaka by water, I boarded the Ofune-Camome boat for a private cruise yesterday from a dock located just a short walk away from Yodoyabashi Station.  With various course routes available at all hours of the day, this 10 person boat is perfect for private occasions.  In addition, riders are allowed to bring their own food and drinks on board which adds to the attractiveness of Camome.  As reservations are required, please visit the web site here in Japanese for more information or email the captain directly at info@ofune-camome.net

As we head into the thick of fall and soon winter, it may be best to wait until next spring to experience Osaka's many rivers in this light.  But for those who are eager to get out onto the water especially during the evening hours, be sure to dress appropriately as it does get chilly.

Osaka Mayor's Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC)

As seen in the picture above, I participated in the Mayor's Foreign Business Networking Club (FBNC) on September 10 at the Mayor's Mansion in Osaka.  After hearing remarks from Kunio Hiramatsu, the mayor of Osaka, two presentations were given on the topic of "water" by the Osaka Municipal Waterworks Bureau and also by NITTO DENKO CORPORATION.

After being educated on the water distribution system in the city and also informed about the overseas operations of the waterworks bureau in Vietnam, Singapore, and China, a representative from NITTO DENKO took over the floor to highlight the company's water treatment successes in India, Spain, Algeria, Australia, China and Singapore.

With Osaka trying to brand itself as a "water metropolis" city, it was nice to hear how the public and private sector are working to expand Osaka's water technology reach in the world.
