Happy 4th of July 【祝】７月４日 アメリカ独立記念日

Yesterday marked for the first time for me to attend the Kobe Club's annual 4th of July BBQ Pool Party celebrating America's independence from England 234 years ago.  Even though the Kobe Club is a membership only club that has been in existence since the late 1860s, the club had a special offer for non-members of the foreign community to partake in the club's 4th of July festivities.

With an American style BBQ along with a three piece jazz band to add ambience, many of the party attendees enjoyed lounging around and swimming in the pool to cool off from a hot and humid summer Sunday afternoon.

After the conclusion of the BBQ party, I stopped by the Nu Chayamachi shopping district located right in the heart of Osaka to see none other than myself displayed as the infamous Yukichi Fukuzawa, who is best represented by being the face of the 10,000 yen ($100) note.  Referring to the last picture in the series, it is amazing how a little make-up and a wig can turn a fairly young westerner into an over 60 year old Japanese.  Yes, believe it or not, that is really me!

昨日、神戸外国倶楽部主催のBBQプールパーティー（２３４年前にアメリカがイギリスから独立したことをお祝いするもの）に初めて参加してきました。神戸外国倶楽部は１８６０年代後半から存在する唯一の会員制のクラブですが、７月４日のフェスティバルのみ外国人コミュニティーの非会員でも特別に参加することができます。

ジャズバンドが良い雰囲気を作り出すアメリカンスタイルのBBQと共に、多くの参加者はのんびり楽しみ、プールで泳ぎ蒸し暑い夏の日曜の午後から解放されていました。

BBQパーティーの後、ほかならぬあの有名な福沢諭吉に扮した自分がディスプレイされているのを見るため大阪の中心にあるNu 茶屋町に立寄ってきました。最後の写真についてですが、少しの化粧とウィッグでまだ若い部類に入る西洋人が６０歳以上の日本人に化けてしまえることは驚きです。信じるも信じないも、あれはほんとに僕 なんです！！

Kobe Club 神戸外国倶楽部

Last Friday together with the general manager from the Wakayama Marina City Royal Pines Hotel, we ventured to the historic Kobe Club nestled in the foothills of Kobe for a meeting. The Kobe Club is a non-profit, private membership club that has been around since the latter part of the 1800s serving Kansai's international community and is home to over 250 active members representing more than 30 countries. The club's diverse membership makes for a very unique atmosphere that one cannot experience so easily in the homogeneous society of Japan.

For those of you who are in Kobe or ever visit Kobe, the Kobe Club is a good place to learn about the history of the foreigners who resided in the area since the port of Kobe opened to the world in 1868.

先週金曜日に和歌山マリーナシティロイヤルパインズホテルの総支配人と神戸山麓にある歴史的な神戸外国倶楽部を訪問し打ち合わせをしました。神戸外国倶楽部は、丁度神戸港が出来た頃と同じ1868年に建設され、当時外国人向けの寛げる場所が殆どないという事情をふまえ、関西在住の外国人にアットホームな雰囲気の空間を提供するため設立されました。現在は神戸外国倶楽部の会員数は約250人を超え、会員は30 カ国以上から集まっています。倶楽部のさまざまな会員のかたが大変独特の雰囲気をかもしており、日本のような単一民族社会では簡単には経験できないような空間になっています。

神戸在住または神戸を訪れたことの有る人にとって、神戸外国倶楽部は1868年の神戸港開港以来その地区に住んでいた外国人の歴史を学ぶにはこの上ない場所になっています。
