Kobe: The Sake Capital of the World? 神戸は酒の都？？

Even if you are not a sake connoisseur, paying a visit to the Nada district of Kobe yields more than 30 sake breweries (for the complete list, check out this link).  Located 20 minutes to the west of Osaka, the Nada district produces 30% of the nation's total sake production.  Originated in the 17th century, sake brewing methods have been passed down from generation to generation making use of the Miya water that gives the sake its delicious and distinctive taste without the presence of iron.

Always a highlight for visitors to the region from overseas, now is a better time than ever to jump on the sake revival bandwagon and attend a sake brewery tour to taste test some of the great sake that this fruitful region has to offer.

Having been to Hakutaka and Kobe Shu-Shin-Kan to try their Hakutaka and Fukuju sake respectively, I can say with much confidence that you will not be disappointed.  However one thing to keep in mind when planning to visit the breweries is that normally they close at 6:00 p.m., so be sure to go early to get the most out of your visit.

『灘の生一本」で知られる日本酒の名産地、灘五郷（なだごごう）。日本酒ツウでない方にとっても、神戸の灘五郷の30を超える酒造メーカーは目を見張るものがあります（詳細リストはこちら）。大阪の中心より西へ２０分のこの地域は、国産の日本酒製造の30％を担っています。

江戸時代より代々受け継がれてきた独自の酒づくりの手法は、「宮水」を活用しています。宮水は酒の色や仕上がりを損なう鉄分の含有量が少なく、繊細でコクのある味を造り出すのに最適なのです。

神戸に旅行をお考えの方には、特に今の時期がおすすめです。酒造りの最盛期であるこの季節は日本酒ツアーも多く、参加されてみるのも良いでしょう。名産地ならではの上質なお酒を味わうことができますよ。

神戸酒心館（しゅしんかん）と白鷹（はくたか）で試飲させていただいたのですが、自信を持ってみなさんにおすすめできる味でした！ちなみにどちらの建物も18時に閉まりますので、十分満喫するために早めにご来場ください。

Bento & Co. - The Rise of the Japanese Lunchbox お弁当箱革命：Bento & Co.

The name "bento" may not mean much to many of you residing outside of Japan, however for those of you who own an Apple computer, you may have the Bento software program on your computer.  But where does the name come from and why did Apple chose to name one of its software "bento"?

Simply put, "bento" means lunch box in English.  For those of you unfamiliar with Japanese lunch boxes, they are a work of art.  Always incorporating a variety of food with the colors of the rainbow, Japanese lunch boxes are not only a sight to see but are constructed in such an organized way that Apple decided to name one of its filemaker software after the term.

After hearing a story of a Frenchman residing in Kyoto who capitalized on the popularity of the Japanese lunch box in Western Europe, I decided to pay a visit to meet the man behind the bento sensation overseas - Mr. Bertrand Thomas of Bento & Co.

With his office located close to Kyoto University, Bertrand informed me that he got started selling bentos over the Internet just two years ago.  Having a passion for bentos, Bertrand marketed the various styles of bentos via his blog to residents in Western Europe.  After continuously receiving over 800 hits a day on his blog, Bertrand had a feeling that he might be able to make selling bentos over the web into a legitimate business.

Fast forward two years later, Bertrand is now the direct overseas distributor for bentos in Japan.  With most of his customers hailing from Western Europe, he has seen orders increase from Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore of late.  With much of the world still untapped for the bento market, Bertrand is hoping to expand his business internationally in addition to opening a bento shop in Kyoto in the near future.

With few success stories in Kansai of late, it was great to have the chance to meet Bertrand and learn about the history of Bento & Co.

日本では聞き慣れた「お弁当」という言葉。食材が色とりどりに詰められたお弁当箱は見た目も鮮やかで、食事に華を添えてくれます。

この度アップルから発売されたソフトウェア「Bento」により、お弁当という言葉にに新たな一面が加えられました。見事に配置されたお弁当の具材にちなんで名付けられたこのソフトは、パソコンでの連絡先情報の整理整頓、プロジェクトのトラッキング、プロジェクト計画などを、すべて一箇所にまとめて管理できます。

そもそも、お弁当という言葉はいつから海外で知られるようになったのでしょうか？

「お弁当箱」の西ヨーロッパでの人気に一役買ったフランス人が京都に住んでいると聞き、さっそく伺うことにしました。 海外でのお弁当ブームの火付け役、 Bento & Co. のBetrand Thomas（ベトランド・トーマス）さんです。

トーマスさんは京都大学の近くに位置するオフィスにて、２年前にインターネットサイトによるお弁当箱の販売を始めました。お弁当に対する情熱は、西ヨーロッパに住む顧客へのブログでの熱心な宣伝につながりました。次第にブログへのアクセス数は毎日800を越えるようになり、インターネットを通じてのより大きなビジネスへの展望が開けることとなりました。

現在、海外へ直接お弁当箱の販売を行っているのは、おそらくBento & Co. だけではないでしょうか。注文は西ヨーロッパからが一番多いそうですが、台湾、マレーシア、シンガポールからも増えてきているようです。世界で知られはじめたお弁当箱。これからより一層の国際的展開を目指して、トーマスさんは京都での店舗設立も含め、 お弁当箱ビジネスを広げていく予定です。

ここ近年、不景気だ不景気だと言われていますが、Bento & Co.の明るいお話を聞くことができ、とても励みになりました。

1300th Anniversary of Nara 平城遷都１３００年祭

With this year marking the 1300th anniversary of Nara being the capital of Japan, which lasted for 74 years until 784, I visited the Heijo Palace site on its final commemorative event day to experience this rich historical area.  Modeled after the capital of the Tang Dynasty in China, Heijo-kyo, which is an UNESCO World Heritage site, was Japan's first international and political capital.

In the pictures above, you can see the former imperial audience hall which is 44 meters (144 feet) wide, 20 meters (66 feet) deep, and 27 meters (89 feet) high.  This hall was the site of the nation's most important ceremonies including the accession to the throne of the emperor and meetings with foreign envoys.  In the second picture from the top, I had my picture taken with individuals modeling the appropriate attire of the time, and for the final picture, I took a snapshot of the closing ceremony concert featuring many characters represented during the 6 month span that the palace site was open to the public.  

Even though the commemorative events at the palace site have finished, Nara is definitely a good place to visit for a cultural and historical lesson like none other.   

７８４年に奈良に都が移されてから、今年でちょうど１３００年になります。日本の歴史を堪能しようと、平城宮跡会場を記念祭の最終日に訪れました。奈良時代に唐の長安をモデルにして建造された平城京は、国際的かつ政治的な首都でした。平城宮跡はユネスコに世界遺産に登録されています。

ページ上部１つ目の写真でご覧いただける第一次大極殿は、正面４４メートル、側面２０メートル、高さ２７メートルあります。大極殿は都の祭事の要所であり、天皇の即位式や外国使節との謁見などに使われていました。２つ目の写真は、奈良時代の貴族を模した衣装に身を包んだ人たちと記念撮影をしたものです。４つ目の写真は、記念祭の閉会式で行われたコンサートです。宮跡が４月末に一般公開されてから６ヶ月の間に活躍したキャラクターたちが注目を浴びました。

平城遷都１３００年祭は終了してしまいましたが、奈良はこの先も、文化も歴史も学べる魅力的な場所であり続けるでしょう。

Kyoto: East Meets West 京都で楽しむ東洋と西洋

To experience the beauty of Kyoto in the fall, I paid a visit to the Mirei Shigemori Garden Museum located close to Kyoto University.  The museum, which is a traditional town house from 1789, was designed by the great 20th century Japanese garden architect Mirei Shigemori.

The tranquil atmosphere encompassing the museum was very refreshing as I was able to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a short time.  As the museum can be visited by appointment only, be sure to contact the museum for viewing availability.

Following my time spent at the museum, I dropped by Falafel Garden - the Israel cafe & restaurant - located 80 meters east of Demachiyanagi Station for tasty lunch before heading back to Osaka for the day.  With an at-home atmosphere that can't be beat, I highly recommend anyone passing through the Demachiyanagi Station area to make an effort to visit Falafel Garden.  With a new property just opened in Nara, I expect its second property to be just as popular as its first.

秋の京都を堪能しようと、京都大学近隣に建つ、重森三玲庭園美術館を訪れました。１７８９年に設立された住宅を利用したこの庭園は、昭和初期の庭師である重森三玲により見事に作り上げられました。

落ち着いた雰囲気に包まれた美術館は、日ごろの忙しさをつかの間忘れさせてくれます。見学の際は予約必須になりますので、必ず事前にご連絡ください。

庭園見学の後、Falafel Garden（ファラフェルガーデン）へ足を運びました。出町柳駅から８０メートル東にあるこのイスラエルカフェ・レストランは、大阪へ帰る前においしいランチをいただくのに最適です。家庭的な暖かさに満ちた空間はとても心地よく、出町柳駅に立ち寄ることがあれば、ぜひ行かれることをおすすめします。別店舗が奈良にもオープンしたばかりで、こちらも京都店に負けない人気のお店になるのではないでしょうか。

Midosuji Gourmet Festival: The Countdown Has Begun!「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」のカウントダウンがスタート！！

In less than 10 days, the inaugural Midosuji Gourmet Festival that JD CREATIONS is producing will have breathed its first breaths of life.  This is without a doubt the largest scale event that my company and I have undertaken in our short history.  In the limited time that we have had to put this event together (10 weeks), we have come a long way.  With an elite organizing committee and strong supporting cast, this event will be something special and hopefully something to build on for future years, ideally as an annual event in Osaka.

With Osaka's own Midosuji Kappo (formerly the Midosuji Parade) event being held adjacent to the Midosuji Gourmet Festival on Sunday, October 10, the epicenter of the city will come to life like it has never before.  Last year alone, over 400,000 people attended the Midosuji Kappo event, which lasts only four hours.  With the Midosuji Gourmet Festival held in conjunction with the Kappo event, who knows how many people will come for the festivities this year!  One thing for sure is that after the Kappo event finishes, the Midosuji Gourmet Festival will still be going on with delicious food, beverages, and stage performances galore until late in the night! 

If you will be in town during October 8th thru 10th, make an effort to get Nakanoshima Park located right next to city hall in Yodoyabashi.  It would be a pleasure to have you at this inaugural event! 

JDクリエーションズが手がけている「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」の開催まで、残すところ10日を切りました。今回のイベントは、今までのものより明らかに規模が大きいのにも関わらず、わずかな準備期間（たった10週間）しかなかったのですが、なんとかここまでやってきました。実行委員のメンバーとその他のイベントに携わってくださっている方々のご協力もあって、「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」は特別なイベントになると思っております。そして、今後も末長く大阪の恒例イベントとなってくれることを願っています。

「御堂筋パレード」として長年親しまれてきた大阪のイベントは、現在「御堂筋kappo」とその名前を変え開催され続けています。今年は、10月10日（日）に開催されるこの「御堂筋kappo」と「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」で、大阪の中心が今までにない程盛り上がってくれることでしょう。開催時間は4時間の「御堂筋kappo」ですが、昨年はなんと40万人もの人が訪れたそうです。「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」も同時に行われる今年は、一体どれくらいの人が訪れるのでしょうか！？「御堂筋kappo」が終わっても私たちのイベントはまだしてますので、食べて飲んで、パフォーマンスを楽しみに来てください。

「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」は、淀屋橋駅下車すぐの中之島公園（市役所南側エリア）で10月8日〜10日まで開催します。みなさん、是非お越しください！！

Experience Kyoto: Arashiyama, Townhouse, Manga & More! 京都を満喫：嵐山、町家、マンガミュージアムなどなど！

In all of my time spent in Kansai, covering more than 7 years, I had never been to Arashiyama in Kyoto until this past weekend.

To kickoff the weekend festivities, I started by renting a bicycle at the Arashiyama Station for 800 yen ($8) valid for one day's use.  After riding around the main street in Arashiyama, I stopped by the red snapper restaurant "Hanana" for lunch with my friends.  Once our hunger had been satisfied, we got back on our bicycles and visited the Nison-in Temple and the Tenryu-ji Temple before arriving back at the main street in Arashiyama to visit the kimono handicraft store, Kurisho.

After seeing all the major sites to see in Arashiyama, we moved on to the next phase of our weekend at the Sanbo Nishinotoin Townhouse, a machiya, which just so happens to be owned by my good friend and kimono atelier owner Shigeyuki Kobayashi.  My past blog about Shige-san, as I call him, can be found here.

As I had stayed at one of Iori's townhouses before (blog can be viewed here), I had an idea of what to expect, however my friend Shige-san's townhouse was spacious beyond belief!  With at least a 5 meter (15 ft.) ceiling and a huge wooden bathtub, the ambience is his townhouse was quite different from the one I experienced in March.  As I have already experienced two Iori townhouse properties (both excellent), I have eight more to visit before completing the entire list.  I am definitely up to the challenge!

The following morning, we got off to an early start by walking only 10 minutes from the townhouse to get to the entrance of Nijo Castle.  Very convenient.  Because of the intense heat even at mid-morning, we briskly walked through the castle and its adjacent grounds before returning to back to the townhouse to check out.

Conveniently located next to the townhouse was the Nishinotoin Tea Shop & Tea House Motoan featuring green tea from Marukyu-Koyamaen Co., Ltd. in Uji City, Kyoto, which has some of the finest green tea in all of Japan.  Not wanting to pass up this opportunity, my friends and I stopped in to have a very traditional Japanese breakfast with green tea before moving on to my friend Shige-san's kimono gallery a few doors down.  

Before calling it a day and heading back to Osaka, we stopped by the Kyoto International Manga Museum to experience Japan's subculture.  At the former site of the Tatsuike Elementary School, the museum opened in November 2006 and currently houses over 300,000 items related to manga with something for every manga enthusiast.  For those wanting to see a different side to Japan, I recommend paying a visit to the museum.

7年以上も関西に居る私ですが、先週初めて嵐山に行ってきました。

嵐山駅では、1日800円で自転車を借りることができますので、 週末の楽しみのとっかかりとして、 まずは自転車で嵐山を周ることにしました。嵐山のメインストリートを走り、鯛匠HANANAというお店でランチをしました。空腹を満たした後に向かった先は、二尊院と天龍寺、そして嵐山のメインストリートへ戻り手描友禅工房久利匠へ行きました。

嵐山の目玉を一通り見た後に、私たちが移動したのは三坊西洞院町の町家です。（ちなみにこの町家は、私の友人であり、着物のアトリエのオーナーである小林重之（シゲ）さんが所有しています。彼のアトリエについては、以前のブログをご覧ください。）

以前も町家庵には泊ったことがあるので、どんな感じになるかは想像していたのですが、シゲさんの町家は想像を以上のものでした！！最低でも5メートルはある天井の高さと多くな木製の浴槽のあるこの町家は、私が3月に泊った町家と全く違うものでした。ふたつの素晴らしい町家庵をすでに堪能した私ですが、残りの8ヶ所にももちろん行くつもりでいます。

翌朝は、徒歩10分のところにある二条城に行ってきました。歩いてもたった10分だなんて、本当に近いですよね。この日もまだ午前中だというのに厳しい暑さだったこともあり、お城巡りは足早に済ませてしましました。

また、町家の隣にある西洞院店 茶房「元庵」では、品質本位のお茶づくりをすることで有名な宇治の丸久小山園のお茶を楽しむことができます。私と友達は、こんなチャンスを逃すなんてと思い、シゲさんの着物ギャラリーに行く前に立ち寄ることにし、お茶と一緒に伝統的な日本の朝ご飯をいただくことにしました。

そして大阪に帰る前の最後の楽しみとして、日本のサブカルチャーを楽しむべく、京都国際マンガミュージアムへ行きました。2006年11月に元龍池小学校を利用して出来たこのミュージアムには、現在30万部以上の漫画が貯蔵されているそうです。

Evening of Traditional Osaka Performing Arts 上方伝統芸能ナイト

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Yamamoto Noh Association's "Evening of Traditional Osaka Performing Arts", which is held with Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean subtitles, at the Yamamoto Noh Theater located close to Osaka Castle.  Some of you may remember that I had the Yamamoto Noh Theater perform off-site for the Hewlett-Packard group that visited Osaka last year in November.  That blog entry can be viewed here.

With Osaka home to many traditional performing arts, this particular event was a "sampler" consisting of 15 minute performances of the following: Silent Movie, Kodan (Storytelling), Rakugo (Comic Storytelling), and Noh Play.

For those of you unfamiliar with these arts, I will outline them below followed by an introduction to the Yamamoto Noh Theater.

Silent Movie: The first silent movie in Japan is said to have been shown on February 15, 1897, by way of the Lumiere brothers from France who started it all with their invention of the cinematograph.  To ensure a successful screening, the film interpreter, who accompanies the cinematographer, had to work in perfect harmony with the cinematographer as projectors in those days were operated by hand.

Kodan (Storytelling): Kodan is a vaudevillian performing art in which a professional storyteller tells a story in front of a desk.

Rakugo (Comic Storytelling): Rakugo was established as a performing art about 300 years ago.  Rakugo is characterized by comic monologues about the lives of townspeople or folk tales.

Noh Play: Reaching its perfection about 650 years ago, Noh is said to be the oldest existing theatrical performance, and is also Japan's first Intangible Cultural Heritage designated by UNESCO.

Yamamoto Noh Theater: Established in 1927, the original theater burned down during World War II, but was rebuilt as the present building in 1950.  The theater was recently designated as a national Tangible Cultural Property from the Japanese government in 2006.  

As the Yamamoto Noh Theater has its multi-lingual subtitle performing arts night on the first and third Saturday of every month, I highly recommend anyone wanting to experience another side to Japanese culture to make the trip to the theater.

週末は 大阪城近くの山本能楽堂で行われた「上方伝統芸能ナイト」に参加してきました。このイベントは日本語、英語、中国語、韓国語の字幕で楽しむことができます。覚えてくれている方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、去年の11月にヒューレッドパッカード社が大阪に来た際、山本能楽堂を迎え伝統芸能を披露していただきました。

この「上方伝統芸能ナイト」は、 活動写真、講談、落語、能の 4つの上方伝統芸能から構成され、それぞれを15分ずつ楽しむことができます。

活動写真：日本初の活動写真は、シネマトグラフを開発したフランスのリュミエール兄弟を通じ、 1897年2月15日に上映されたものだと言われています。サイレント映画ということで映画説明者（後の活動弁士）が上映には不可欠でした。また、映写機は手回し式だったので、映写技師と説明者が息を合わせることがとても重要でした。

講談：前に釈台を置き、物語を読む寄席演芸です。

落語：今から約300年前の江戸中期から広まったと言われています。町民の生活やおとぎ話を滑稽に語るもので、話にオチがつくのが特徴的です。

能：約650年前の室町時代に大成された能楽は、世界最古の演劇と言われています。また、日本で最初にユネスコ世界無形遺産の指定を受けました。

山本能楽堂：1927年（昭和2年）に建設されたが、その後、戦災に遭い焼失してしまいました。そして1950年（昭和25年）に再建され、現在に至っています。 2006年（平成18年）には、市街地にある木造3階建てで、伝統的な能舞台を持つ能楽堂として貴重なことから、文化審議会により国の登録有形文化財として登録されました。

山本能楽堂での、多言語で楽しめる上方伝統芸能ナイトは毎月第1、第3土曜日に行われていますので、是非一度ご覧ください。

2010 Thai Festival タイ フェスティバル 2010

Located just a few minutes from the Hyatt Regency Osaka, I stopped by the 2010 Thai Festival at ATC after recuperating from my annual summer BBQ the night before.  As this was my first time visiting the Thai Festival, I came away quite impressed.  In its 8th year in Osaka, the two day festival averages around 40,000 people per day with more than 20 Thai restaurant vendors coming from around the country to promote their cuisine and products.

With support from the Royal Thai Consulate-General Osaka and other corporate sponsors, some well-known Thai performers showcased their singing, dancing, and boxing abilities on stage to entertain the guests who were also sampling many of the Thai delicacies that were being offered.

As the next Thai Festival, which is held at different locations throughout the year, is scheduled for Nagoya on September 4th and 5th, I highly recommend those of you visiting or living in the area to check out this fun-filled event.

前夜のサマーバーベキューからの疲れも回復したので、土曜日はハイアット リージェンシー 大阪から数分のところに位置するATCで行われたタイ フェスティバル 2010に行ってきました。今回初めて参加したのですが、とても興味深いイベントでした。8年目を迎えるこのイベントには、1日におよそ4万人もの人が訪れるそうで（イベントは2日間）、各地から20店以上のタイレストランが集まり料理や商品を紹介しています。

タイ王国大阪総領事館や他のスポンサー企業によるサポートで、舞台では有名なタイのパフォーマーのエンターテイメント（歌ったり、踊ったり、ボクシングをしたり）が行われていました。お客さん達は、美味しいタイ料理のサンプルを食べながらそれを楽しんでいたようです。

次は、9月4日と5日に名古屋で行われます。お近くにお住まいの方は是非足を運んでみてください。

Cooling Off in Moriguchi 避暑のため守口へ

As temperatures have been hovering around 36 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Farenheit) of late, I took in the surrounding skyline of Moriguchi City from the Pines Beer Garden, which is located 15 minutes from the center of Osaka at the Moriguchi Royal Pines Hotel. 

With comfortable seating for over 150 people, you can experience the all-u-can eat and all-u-can drink affair for 90 minutes at 3,800 yen ($38).  With the Pines Beer Garden in operation until the middle of September and this year's theme being "Pirates of the Caribbean",  I recommend those in the area to consider stopping by to cool off from the scorching summer heat.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Moriguchi City, it is home to the headquarters of two very famous Japanese companies - Sanyo and Panasonic.  Add the Moriguchi Royal Pines Hotel into the mix and you have the three powerhouses of this Osaka suburb.

このところ気温が36度前後に達する日が続いているので、守口市内が良く見渡せるパインズビアガーデン（大阪中心部から15分のところにある守口ロイヤルパインズホテル内）へ行ってきました。

150以上のゆったりとした席があり、3,800円で90分の食べ放題・飲み放題を楽しむことができます。今年のテーマは「カリブの海賊」で、 ビアガーデンは9月中旬まで営業していますので、是非一度この場所で夏の暑さから逃れてみてはいかがでしょうか。

守口市と聞いてもあまりピンと来ない方もいるかもしれませんが、三洋電機とパナソニックの本社があることでも有名なところです。

Fushimi Inari Shrine Visit 伏見稲荷大社へ

After seeing pictures and video clips, I finally made the trek to visit Fushimi Inari Shrine located to the south of central Kyoto.  With intermittent rain throughout the day, the number of visitors at the shrine for a Sunday was less than normal, however the ratio of non-Japanese (mainly westerners) compared to Japanese seemed to be about 7:3.

The shrine founded in 711 will be celebrating its 1,300 year anniversary next year.  As Nara is celebrating its 1,300 year anniversary this year, I am expecting there to be many events and activities at the shrine next year worth visiting.

The main attraction at the shrine is the roughly 10,000 small torii (shrine gates) that go beyond shrine to the far reaches of the neighboring hills.  The entire journey supposedly takes two hours to complete.  However due to the weather, I decided to forgo reaching the summit and turned around less than a quarter into the journey.

The remarkable thing about the 10,000 shrine gates is that they all are sponsored by corporations spanning the entire country with the company name and the year when the sponsorship was made carved into the wooden gate.  To sponsor a gate, prices start from 500,000 yen ($5,000) and go over 1,000,000 yen ($10,000).

As Inari is originally known as the "god of rice", many visitors come to pray for success in their businesses nowadays.  For those of you wanting good luck in your future business dealings, I highly suggest a visit to Fushimi Inari Shrine.

写真や動画は見ていましたが、やっと京都市伏見区にある伏見稲荷大社へ足を運ぶことができました。一日中降ったりやんだりの雨のせいか、日曜にしては参拝者が少なかったように思います。また、外国人（主に西洋人）と日本人は7対3ぐらいでした。

711年に造られた伏見稲荷は来年に1300周年を迎えます。奈良で平城遷都1300年祭が行われているように、来年は伏見稲荷でも様々なイベントが行われることを期待しています。

この神社の一番の見所は、なんと言っても1万基近くの鳥居があり、それらは神社を越え隣接する丘へと連なっています。おおよそ2時間を目安に、すべてを見終えることができると思います。しかし今回は天候の関係で、4分の1程をまわったところで、頂上まで行って戻ってくることを見送ることにしました。

この1万基近くの鳥居について驚くべきことは、全ての鳥居に企業スポンサーがついていることです。その企業は全国に渡り、会社名とスポンサーになった日付が鳥居に刻まれています。ちなみに鳥居のスポンサーのなるためには、50万円から100万円かかるそうです。

稲荷は元々「稲の神」として知られいましたが、現代では多くの人がビジネスでの成功を祈って参拝に訪れます。ビジネスで成功を収めたい方がいましたら、是非一度、伏見稲荷大社へ行くことをお勧めします。

Inoriboshi Star Festival 平成OSAKA天の川伝説 2010

Tanabata, known as the Star Festival in English, is held on July 7 every year.  This year marked the first year that I could experience a starry night for the Star Festival as July 7 is normally overcast or rainy due to it being the rainy season.

In celebration of the Star Festival, the city had a special event, which allowed participants to purchase Inoriboshi, twinkling light balls, and toss them into the river running through the center of the city.  As you can see from the pictures above, in total 50,000 blue LED light balls were used to beautify the waters of the business district on a picturesque summer evening.

七夕は皆さんご存知のように、毎年7月7日に行われます。日本では雨期のため、七夕の日はどんよりしていたり、雨模様のことが多いですが、今年は初めて星空の夜を楽しむことができました。

七夕を祝って、大阪市による平成OSAKA天の川伝説 2010が開催されました。参加者は、いのり星（プラスチック球の中にLEDライトを内包したもの）を購入し、自分の願いを託し、大川に放流します。写真をみていただくと分かるように、5万個の青色のLED電球に彩られ、 辺りはまるで絵のように美しい夏の夕暮れ時となりました。

Happy 4th of July 【祝】７月４日 アメリカ独立記念日

Yesterday marked for the first time for me to attend the Kobe Club's annual 4th of July BBQ Pool Party celebrating America's independence from England 234 years ago.  Even though the Kobe Club is a membership only club that has been in existence since the late 1860s, the club had a special offer for non-members of the foreign community to partake in the club's 4th of July festivities.

With an American style BBQ along with a three piece jazz band to add ambience, many of the party attendees enjoyed lounging around and swimming in the pool to cool off from a hot and humid summer Sunday afternoon.

After the conclusion of the BBQ party, I stopped by the Nu Chayamachi shopping district located right in the heart of Osaka to see none other than myself displayed as the infamous Yukichi Fukuzawa, who is best represented by being the face of the 10,000 yen ($100) note.  Referring to the last picture in the series, it is amazing how a little make-up and a wig can turn a fairly young westerner into an over 60 year old Japanese.  Yes, believe it or not, that is really me!

昨日、神戸外国倶楽部主催のBBQプールパーティー（２３４年前にアメリカがイギリスから独立したことをお祝いするもの）に初めて参加してきました。神戸外国倶楽部は１８６０年代後半から存在する唯一の会員制のクラブですが、７月４日のフェスティバルのみ外国人コミュニティーの非会員でも特別に参加することができます。

ジャズバンドが良い雰囲気を作り出すアメリカンスタイルのBBQと共に、多くの参加者はのんびり楽しみ、プールで泳ぎ蒸し暑い夏の日曜の午後から解放されていました。

BBQパーティーの後、ほかならぬあの有名な福沢諭吉に扮した自分がディスプレイされているのを見るため大阪の中心にあるNu 茶屋町に立寄ってきました。最後の写真についてですが、少しの化粧とウィッグでまだ若い部類に入る西洋人が６０歳以上の日本人に化けてしまえることは驚きです。信じるも信じないも、あれはほんとに僕 なんです！！

Visit to Hikone 彦根訪問

Nestled about 45 minutes to the east of Kyoto (90 minutes from Osaka) and adjacent to the largest lake in Japan, Lake Biwa, I paid a visit to Hikone City in Shiga Prefecture.  Having not been to Hikone in a few years, I visited the sightseeing landmark, Hikone Castle, located within walking distance from the station for the first time.  The three story castle, which is not yet recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, was built more than 400 years ago by the Ii clan.


A few years ago, Hikonyan (pictured above), Hikone Castle's Samurai cat mascot, was created as part of the city's promotion and branding.  A hit amongst all visitors to the castle, Hikonyan has placed Hikone city on the map and continues to live a busy life by making various cameo appearances at events nationwide.


Before returning to Osaka, I stopped by a local restaurant in Hikone to have some exquisite Omi beef for dinner.  Even though Omi beef is not well known outside of Japan such as Kobe beef, the quality and taste puts it on the same level and is highly sought after domestically.  Planning on having Omi beef is recommended for those of you planning to stop by the area in Shiga Prefecture.  

京都から東へ45分くらいのところに位置し、（大阪から90分）日本で一番大きな湖である琵琶湖に隣接する滋賀県彦根市を訪問しました。ここ数年、彦根にはご無沙汰で、駅から徒歩圏内にある観光名所の彦根城を初回訪問しました。彦根城はユネスコ世界遺産としてまだ登録されていませんが、井伊氏によって400年以上前に築城されました。

数年前、ひこにゃん（上記写真）は、彦根城のサムライ猫のマスコットで、市のプロモーションとブランド強化の一環で製作されました。彦根城への観光客のみんなに人気のひこにゃんは、全国的なイベントには登場し、忙しい生活を送っています。

大阪に戻る前、夕食に極上の近江牛を味わうべく彦根の地元のレストランに立ち寄りました。近江牛は日本以外では神戸牛ほどよくは知られていませんが、質と味は同じ評価に値し、国内ではひっぱりだこのお肉です。滋賀県界隈に赴く計画がおありなら、近江牛を食すのがお勧めですね。

Heian Shrine 2010 Spring Concert 平安神宮 紅しだれコンサート2010

On April 11, I attended the Heian Shrine Spring Concert in the evening for the first time.  Even though rain was lightly falling, the shrine, which is located in Kyoto, was overflowing with people taking pictures such as the ones above of the cherry blossom "sakura" trees and the surrounding landscape.

As the cherry blossoms only are in bloom for about two weeks out of the entire year, Kyoto, especially on the weekends during this season, is a mad house with people coming from all over the country to enjoy the world and national heritage sites encompassed by cherry blossoms.

Whether viewing the cherry blossoms during the day or at night, they are such a beautiful sight to see.  If only they could be in bloom all year round.

4月11日夜、「平安神宮 紅しだれコンサート2010」に初めて参加してまいりました。雨がぱらついていましたが、京都にある平安神宮はこの上なく素晴らしい桜の木や周囲の風景をカメラに収める人々であふれかえっていました。

桜は一年のうちでたった約2週間だけが開花期で、特に今シーズンの週末の京都は、桜が満開の世界遺産や国宝地区を楽しむ世界各国からやって来た人々で大浮かれの街と化していました。

桜見物が昼間であれ夜間であれ、こんなに美しい眺めが楽しめます。

Darvish Gallery ダルビッシュ ギャラリー

On March 31, I paid a visit to the Hyatt Regency Osaka Hotel to meet up with Farsad Darvish, owner of the Darvish Gallery.  Farsad, who is a long-time Osaka resident, was born and raised in Iran and went to high school and university in the U.S. before settling here in Osaka.

After establishing the Darvish Gallery in Ashiya, the "Beverly Hills of Japan", Farsad decided to move the high-end Persian art and handicraft store to the basement floor of the Hyatt Regency Osaka. Although Persia is known for its luxury carpets, Farsad is focused on spreading the word about other valuable items such as Persian glass in his pursuit to educate the Japanese population and create more of a cultural bond between his homeland and Japan.  During our meeting, Farsad and I discussed about potential collaborative opportunities to promote his gallery.

Some of you may be familar with Farsad's son, Yu Darvish, who is the ace pitcher for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters of the Japanese professional baseball league, and was a part of the 2008 Beijing Olympic and 2009 World Baseball Classic teams.

3月31日に、Darvish Gallery（ダルビッシュ ギャラリー）のオーナーである、Farsad Darvish氏と合流するべくハイアット リージェンシー大阪を訪問しました。長期間、大阪の居住者であるFarsad氏は、生まれも育ちもイランであり、大阪に落ち着く前にアメリカの高校と大学を卒業しました。

芦屋にDarvish Galleryを設立した後、Farsad氏は高品質のペルシア美術とペルシャの工芸品の店をハイアット リージェンシー大阪の地階に移転する決断をしました。ペルシアは豪華な絨毯で知られていますが、Farsad氏は日本人教育と、母国と日本間のさらなる文化的結びつきを追求するなかで、ペルシャガラスのようなほかの価値ある商品名を広げることに焦点をあてています。会合中、Farsad氏と私は、Farsad氏のギャラリーを促進するこれからの潜在的な共同制作の機会について話し合った。

Farsad氏の息子さんをご存知のかたもいるでしょう。そう、彼の息子さんは日本のプロ野球界の北海道日本ハムと2009年ワールドベースボールクラシックチームのエース、ダルビッシュ有さんです。
