There are plenty of social mixers happening every Friday, Saturday and Sunday somewhere close to you.  Now some of the sites that I've mentioned below are only in Japanese, so if you're Japanese skills need some brushing up, better to get a friend to assist you before you miss your chance at a great night out!

Royal Linkage is run by a Japanese friend of mine who's been in the party organizing business for more than 10 years.  With a wealth of experience, you can be sure that the parties hosted by Royal Linkage will be enjoyable.  The downside with Royal Linkage is that the site is in Japanese only, however with that said, the parties tend to be attended by mainly Japanese so if you are looking for some Japanese friends, check out one of Royal Linkage's parties in Osaka.    

Furtherment of International Friendship Organization (FIFO) - Osaka

FIFO is a recent newcomer to the "international party" circuit.  As I haven't been to one of their parties before I can't give you a first-hand point-of-view but they may be worth checking out if you are looking for a more "international" feel of an event.

WhyNot!?

When it comes to international parties in Kansai, WhyNot!? is where it's at!  They've been around the block several times having been in business for around 8 years, which is quite significant in the party industry here in Kansai.  Plus I know the sisters who are behind the WhyNot!? brand.  Very bright they are indeed.  Even though I have not been to a WhyNot!? party in several years, their events tend to be well attended.  If you're in your 20s then for sure WhyNot!? would be a good place to start as their guests consist of university students, graduate students and company employees early in their careers.

iNetwork Japan

Another international party organization that has been around for several years, iNetwork Japan holds various types of events in Osaka and Kyoto for most of the year.  Even though I haven't attended one of their events, my friend is the brains behind iNetwork Japan, so I would definitely give them a look if your schedule fits with one of their events.  In terms of price, iNetwork Japan in general is probably the least expensive so if you don't want to spend too much money the first time out, they may be the best option for you.

So next time you're looking for some "fun" on the weekend, I definitely recommend that you check out the sites I've listed above for details.

Kobe Fireworks via Sailboat

Having never experienced the Kobe fireworks extravaganza (it always falls on the same day as the Yodogawa fireworks display in Osaka every year), I thought what not a better way than to see the fireworks up close not from land but rather from sea on Saturday, August 6.  Realizing that one of my friends was planning an evening out on the open waters to enjoy the fireworks in Kobe, I jumped at the opportunity to join in on the fun on his sailboat.

Starting from Osaka Hokko Yacht Harbor (see picture 1) a little before 4:00 p.m., we departed for Kobe enjoy the cruise along the way.  After two hours of cruising, we entered into Kobe territory (see picture 2) where we enjoyed a great BBQ on my friend's sailboat as part of the pre-fireworks festivities before the main event took place from 7:30 p.m.

At the conclusion of the one hour fireworks show, one of the most interesting scenes of the night was seeing all the motor boats and sailboats that had come to enjoy the festivities just like us leave in droves at the same instant.  It was just like out of a Hollywood movie as all the boats got "out of dodge" in a matter of a few minutes.  Very entertaining to say the least.

The two hour return trip back to Osaka was quite uneventful as most of the boats that came to see the fireworks returned to other areas like Suma and Awaji Island.

Having never seen the fireworks so close before, it was a very worthwhile experience.  With some much more left to explore and land and sea, I am eager for the next opportunity.  As always, I'll keep you posted!

World Forum for Bio/Medical Device in Kansai 2011

Organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry (METI - Kansai) and the Osaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (OCCI), the World Forum for Bio/Medical Device is back in Kansai for 2011.

Taking place the week of February 21-25, the first day will include a site visit in Osaka followed by two days of company presentations and panel discussions before the forum moves to Kobe and then Kyoto to round out the week.

Dedicated to promoting the development of innovative medical, diagnostic and analytic devices and businesses, the World Forum for Bio/Medical Device brings the foreign industry leaders together for a week to exchange their recent findings with the Japanese bio/medical device community.  This year representatives from the following overseas locations will be on hand to participate:

As one of the core industries in Kansai, the region is making headway towards becoming the place in Asia for one's bio/medical device needs.  It will be interesting as to what affect the forum has on the community here in Kansai.

Kansai - The Real Japan? You Be The Judge. 関西こそが日本？（・・と、思いますか？）

For most people residing outside of Japan, Kyoto and Tokyo are the cities that are most familiar followed by Osaka, Hiroshima, etc.  However, what about "Kansai"?  When I first visited Osaka (the second largest city in Japan) 10 years ago, my plane did not land at Osaka Airport as I thought it would but rather at Kansai International Airport.  Was Kansai another way to say Osaka?

I soon came to realize that Kansai was the name for the region that includes the ancient capital cities of Nara and Kyoto along with Osaka, the port city of Kobe (also where Kobe beef originated), and the largest lake in Japan - Lake Biwa in Shiga.  Geographic details about this region are depicted in the pictures above.

With Tokyo being the present-day capital of Japan, it is understandable why it gets all the attention, however Kansai has a lot going for it as a region and offers a different lifestyle than what one can find in the metropolitan city of Tokyo, which makes Kansai attractive.  

Having previously lived in Tokyo to experience the city first-hand, it is safe to say that I am biased when it comes to talking about Kansai.  After living in Tokyo, I moved to Kansai and have never looked back since.  Tokyo is comparable to any large metropolitan city in the world. Even though most of the people living in Tokyo are Japanese (as they are anywhere else in this country), the city doesn't have much of a "Japanese" feel to it.  Just more of a "big city" feel.  

Kansai on the other hand does maintain its sense of "Japanese".  Being home to two of the former capitals (Nara & Kyoto) and the merchant capital of Osaka, the region is where Japan got started years ago and even with the passage of time, the region has maintained a great balance of the old with the new to please the masses.  

Also based on the statistics above, the region has a population equivalent to that of Australia and an economy ranked in the top 20 in the world annually.  As a place to visit or possibly conduct business, I cannot say enough positive things about the region.  

Unfortunately current mass media places too much attention on Tokyo as a destination.  Even most tours aimed at Westerners are Tokyo-based occasionally offering a side trip to Kyoto.  It makes sense though as those are the only two cities that ever get mentioned in mainstream media, however coming all the way to Kyoto from Tokyo (two hours by bullet train) and then not stopping by Osaka, Nara, etc., which are just 30 minutes by local train from Kyoto, does not make much sense to me.  Realizing that the travel itineraries are very tight as they are, it would make more sense to split the time in Tokyo and Kansai equally so that visitors can experience as much of Kansai as possible within their allotted time rather than 1-2 days only in Kyoto as is the norm.  

To sum everything up, when looking to experience the "real" Japan, schedule a trip to Kansai and see for yourself what this great region has to offer.  In the end, only you can be the judge.

海外では東京、大阪、京都、広島などがよく知られていますが、「関西」はどうでしょう？10年前に初めて大阪を訪れた時、私が乗る飛行機が到着したのは『大阪空港』ではなく、「関西空港」でした。「関西って大阪の別名かな？」などと思ったものです。

日本に来てすぐ、関西とは大阪に加えて、神戸のような港町（神戸牛も有名ですよね）、奈良・京都のような歴史ある地、そして日本最大の湖「琵琶湖」がある滋賀を含むエリアの総称であると気づきました。

首都が東京にあることで、ついついそちらにばかり目がいってしまいますが、関西は東京とはまた違った趣があり、活気もあります。

実際に東京に住んだことがある私が話すと、若干意見が偏ってしまうかもしれませんが、東京から関西に移住して以来、東京に戻ろうと思ったことは一度もありません。東京は、世界の大都市に並ぶ迫力があり、居住者の大多数が日本人であるにもかかわらず、『日本的』な感じがしませんでした。とにかく『大都市！』という印象です。

一方で関西は、『日本的』な雰囲気を十分残しています。奈良と京都という二大歴史都市、さらに商人の町・大阪もあり、古き良き日本の中心地です。また、年月がたった今も、これらの地は昔と今の文化をうまく共存させており、訪ねてくる人々を歓ばせています。

統計によると、関西の人口はオーストラリアの人口に並び、また関西経済は世界で年間トップ20に含まれます（記事上部を参照）。旅行やビジネスにもってこいの場所と言えるでしょう。

残念ながら、海外向けのメディアは未だに東京メインなのが現状です。外国人向けの旅行会社も、旅行プランはほぼ東京行きで、たまに京都もまわれるようになっている程度です。メディアで取り上げられるのが東京である以上、旅行プランも東京中心になるのは当然ですよね。ただ、はるばる２時間以上かけて東京から京都に来て、そこからわずか30分の大阪や奈良に行かずに帰るというのは、もったいないな〜と思います。ツアーは基本的にハードな行程になっているので、今後はぜひ東京と関西エリアに同じだけの時間を割けるようなプランを作ってほしいものです。1〜2日かけて京都だけを見るより、時間をとってゆっくり関西全体を見る方が、より素晴らしい思い出、そして将来のビジネスのきっかけが作れると思います。

『真の日本らしさ』を追求したい方は、ぜひ一度関西に訪れて、自身で体感していただくことをおすすめします。やっぱり「百聞は一見にしかず」ですからね。

So Where Did Valentine's Day Come From in Japan? 日本のバレンタインの起源は？

With Valentine's Day a little over a month away, I figured that I would throw a little trivia your way fittingly for the season.

Yes, you can thanks the confectionery and cake company founded in Kobe in 1931 for bringing Valentine's Day to Japan's shores 75 years ago. Naturally geared towards the foreign population in Kobe, Valentine's Day started to be accepted nationally in 1953 with Morozoff being the first to promote the holiday to the masses.

For those of you not familiar with the company, you may be wondering where the Morozoff name originally came from? The answer to that is in Valentine Fedorovich Morozoff. The man who started it all for the company that now operates more than 900 cafes and restaurants in Japan originally hailed from Russia.

Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, Valentine fled to northeastern China and then moved to Seattle before finally settling in Kobe in 1924. In 1926 he opened his own confectionery store before establishing his company five years later. 

A pioneer to say the least, Valentine revolutionized the confectionery industry in Japan, taking it from a Japanese sweets-focused society to creating a community of cheese cake, chocolate and custard pudding lovers.

あと1ヶ月ほどでバレンタインですね。今日はこの季節にぴったりのトリビアをご紹介します。

1931年に神戸に誕生した洋菓子メーカー「モロゾフ」が、日本にバレンタインを持ち込んだのは今から75年前になります。そもそも神戸の外国人居住者に注目して始められたこのイベント。1953年には全国に浸透し、モロゾフはバレンタインを国民的行事として印象づけるパイオニアとなりました。

モロゾフについてあまり詳しくない方にとっては、社名の由来は気になるところでしょうか。この名前は、ヴァレンティン・フョードロヴィチ・モロゾフから来ています。ロシア出身の彼こそが、国内に900ものカフェやレストランを経営しているモロゾフの原点でした。

1917年のロシア革命勃発により、ヴァレンティンと父のヨーデルは中国北東部、そして米国シアトルへと移り住み、最終的に神戸に落ち着きました。1924年のことです。ふたりは2年後に洋菓子店を開き、さらにその5年後にはモロゾフ製菓を立ち上げました。モロゾフ親子により日本の製菓産業は革新され、お菓子好きな日本人の嗜好に合った洋菓子作りが開始されました。チーズケーキやチョコレート、プリンなどの人気スイーツは、モロゾフあってのものだったのですね。

Kobe's Tiger...ASICS 神戸のタイガー、アシックス

If you are a runner or involved with track and field, you know the brand ASICS.  Having seen the brand in footwear stores and mail-order catalogs when growing up in the States, I just assumed that the brand was American or European.  Even after moving to Japan, it took some years before I learned that ASICS was actually a Japanese company and even more so, born and bred right next to Osaka in the city of Kobe.

So if ASICS is a Japanese company, why is it called ASICS?  Sounding nothing like Japanese, I conducted some research to find out about the company's roots.

Established in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, the company started off as a hit with Olympic athletes in the '50s, '60s and '70s thanks in part to the popularity of the Onitsuka Tiger brand.  Bruce Lee even wore a pair of yellow and black Onitsuka Tigers with a matching jumpsuit in his film - Game of Death.

It was not until 1977 when the Onitsuka Tiger brand merged with several others that the ASICS brand was officially born.   Now back to the point in question, what does ASICS mean?  The company's name comes from anima sana in corpore sano in Latin, which translates to "a sound mind in a sound body" for us English speakers.

With its American headquarters in Irvine, California, ASICS has expanded its operations to subsidiaries located in 23 cities across the globe, and is the apparel manufacturer of choice for Seattle Mariners baseball player Ichiro Suzuki.

With a strong presence nationally, it will be interesting to see how ASICS can increase its share of the market overseas in the years to come.

日本では長年おなじみのアシックス。アメリカで生まれ育った私も、店頭や通販雑誌でアシックスの靴を見かけることがありました。そして、なんとなく、アメリカかヨーロッパのブランドなんだろうな〜と思っていました・・。日本に来てから数年して、ようやく「アシックスは日本のブランドやったんや！しかも本社は神戸やん！」と気づきました。

でも、やっぱり『アシックス（ASICS）』って日本の会社っぽくない響きですよね。どうしてでしょう？さっそく名前の由来を調べてみました。

アシックスの元となる鬼塚株式会社は、1949年に鬼塚喜八郎により設立されました。オリンピック選手に利用されたことと、トラのトレードマーク『オニツカタイガー』の効果が相まって、50・60・70年代にかけて、大きな人気を得ることとなりました。なんと、あのブルース・リーも映画「死亡遊戯」で、オニツカタイガーの黄色と黒のスニーカーを揃いのトラックスーツで着こなしています。

1977年にオニツカタイガーと他のスポーツウェアブランドが合併したことで、アシックスが誕生しました。さて、ここで最初の疑問点に戻りまして、社名の由来についてです。アシックスという名前は、古代ローマの作家ユウェナリスが唱えた「健全なる精神は健全なる身体にこと宿るべし（Mens Sana in Corpore Sano)」という、ラテン語の一文から来ています。Mens（才知）を、より動的な意味を持つAnima（生命）に置き換えて、頭文字 A. S. I. C. S を並べているのです。

アシックスはカリフォルニア州アーバイン市にアメリカ支社を置き、世界23都市で子会社による経営を展開しています。また、シアトル・マリナーズのイチロー選手のスパイク、アンダーシャツなどのスポーツウェアを専属で手掛けています。

日本では十分有名となったアシックスですが、この先国外でもますます伸びていくことでしょう。いっそうの活躍が楽しみです。

Rokkosan Pasture & Cheese House 六甲山牧場：人と動物と自然のふれあいの場

One of the most famous mountain ranges in Japan, Mount Rokko makes up the backdrop behind the downtown area of Kobe. With Arima Onsen (hot springs) being the main draw to the area, the Rokkosan Pasture & Cheese House is a nice alternative for those not looking for a soak.  

Located less than an hour away from the center of Kobe, the Rokkosan Pasture is like a mini zoo with ponies, sheep, rabbits and mini pigs roaming around the grounds to interact with visitors.  But the fun does not stop there as you can participate in classes on how to make carmel, butter, cheese, sausage, wool, and pottery for a learning experience like none other.

With dining facilities on site and various animal shows and related events held throughout the year, no matter what season, escaping the hustle and bustle of downtown and heading up to Rokkosan Pasture for some R&R is recommended.  Except for being closed on Tuesdays from the beginning of November to the middle of March, the pasture is open everyday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for your enjoyment.

日本三百名山に数えられる六甲山。豊かな六甲山脈でもよく知られていますよね。六甲山は神戸市の後方に美しくそびえ立ち、見事な背景を作り上げています。六甲山地域は有馬温泉が有名ですが、温泉以外の癒しスポットをお探しの方には「六甲山牧場：人と動物と自然のふれあいの場」がおすすめです。

神戸の中心地から1時間とかからず来ることができるこちらの牧場は、子馬・羊・うさぎ・子豚などが自由に生活しており、まるで小さな動物園のようです。しかも、実際に近くでふれあえるようになっています。

ふれあいのみに留まらず、自分で作る生キャラメル、バター、チーズ、ソーセージ、羊毛、陶芸などなど、実に様々な体験教室が用意されています。なかなか他では経験できない楽しみがたくさん詰まっている施設です。

お食事どころは施設内に数カ所設置されています。また、色々なアニマルショーも開催されていたりで、イベント各種も1年中行われているようです。都会の喧噪から離れ、六甲山に登ってゆっくりリラックスするのもいいでしょう。季節を選ばないところも利点です。 11月初旬から3月中旬までは、毎週火曜日が定休日となります。牧場の開場時間は9:00〜17:00です。

Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Exhibition Center 橋の科学館

Where does one go to learn about the construction of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and other world renown bridges?  None other than the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Exhibition Center located roughly 20 minutes to the west of Kobe by train.

With the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, also known as the Pearl Bridge, finally completed in 1998, the twelve year project placed the bridge on the map as having the world's longest span of any suspension bridge at 1,991 meters (6,532 feet).  At a cost of 500 billion yen ($6 billion) to make, the six lane bridge is used by approximately 23,000 cars per day.

Highlighting the bridge's history and design, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Exhibition Center features a kids corner, 3D theater, and a wind tunnel simulator, in addition to the numerous visuals on display.  As the center is closed for most of the year on Monday, it is recommended to visit on Tuesday - Sunday to avoid any disappointment.

As one of the many landmarks in Kansai, I personally suggest you visit the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge during the late evening hours (as seen in the picture above) to capture its true beauty.

明石海峡大橋、またの名をパールブリッジは1998年に満を持して完成されました。12年の歳月をかけて造られ、世界で最長の中央支間1,991mを誇ります。建設費は約5,000億円

にのぼり、平均およそ2万3千台もの車が日々6車線を利用しています。

明石海峡大橋をはじめとした、日本の「橋」について学ぶにはどこへ行けば良いと思いますか？JR三宮駅より電車で20分ほど行くと、答えが見えてきます。

「橋の科学館」は、本州四国連絡橋の歴史、架橋技術を学習する場として設置されました。数々の展示物に加え、お子さんがクイズやゲームを通して橋について学べる「ちびっ子コーナー」や、200インチ大画面の「3Dシアター・ギャラリー」、シュミレーションを実際に見ることができる「明石海峡大橋40mの風洞実験模型」など、体験型のコーナーもあります。橋の科学館は基本毎週月曜閉館ですので、お間違えのないようお気をつけ下さい。

関西の観光スポットとして明石海峡大橋に行かれる際は、夜に訪れることをおすすめします。写真でご覧いただけるように、橋の美しさが夜空の下でいっそう際立ちます。

Kobe: The Sake Capital of the World? 神戸は酒の都？？

Even if you are not a sake connoisseur, paying a visit to the Nada district of Kobe yields more than 30 sake breweries (for the complete list, check out this link).  Located 20 minutes to the west of Osaka, the Nada district produces 30% of the nation's total sake production.  Originated in the 17th century, sake brewing methods have been passed down from generation to generation making use of the Miya water that gives the sake its delicious and distinctive taste without the presence of iron.

Always a highlight for visitors to the region from overseas, now is a better time than ever to jump on the sake revival bandwagon and attend a sake brewery tour to taste test some of the great sake that this fruitful region has to offer.

Having been to Hakutaka and Kobe Shu-Shin-Kan to try their Hakutaka and Fukuju sake respectively, I can say with much confidence that you will not be disappointed.  However one thing to keep in mind when planning to visit the breweries is that normally they close at 6:00 p.m., so be sure to go early to get the most out of your visit.

『灘の生一本」で知られる日本酒の名産地、灘五郷（なだごごう）。日本酒ツウでない方にとっても、神戸の灘五郷の30を超える酒造メーカーは目を見張るものがあります（詳細リストはこちら）。大阪の中心より西へ２０分のこの地域は、国産の日本酒製造の30％を担っています。

江戸時代より代々受け継がれてきた独自の酒づくりの手法は、「宮水」を活用しています。宮水は酒の色や仕上がりを損なう鉄分の含有量が少なく、繊細でコクのある味を造り出すのに最適なのです。

神戸に旅行をお考えの方には、特に今の時期がおすすめです。酒造りの最盛期であるこの季節は日本酒ツアーも多く、参加されてみるのも良いでしょう。名産地ならではの上質なお酒を味わうことができますよ。

神戸酒心館（しゅしんかん）と白鷹（はくたか）で試飲させていただいたのですが、自信を持ってみなさんにおすすめできる味でした！ちなみにどちらの建物も18時に閉まりますので、十分満喫するために早めにご来場ください。

Goodbye Rainy Season and Hello Summer! 梅雨が終わり夏が来た！

As the month long rainy season in Japan has come to yet another close, this past weekend marked the beginning of summer.  Realizing that area beaches would be packed with people, I opted to have the beach come to me by attending the final day of the four day Beach Volleyball Osaka Cup held in the center of Osaka to witness the men and ladies dive, spike and serve their way to the championship.

As the location of the Osaka Cup in Nakanoshima is normally an empty space, the tournament organizers had to bring in tons of sand to re-create a beach volleyball court in addition to constructing the grandstands for fans to watch.  It just goes to show what is possible with a little imagination.

To follow-up my day of "fun in the sun", I headed out towards the Kobe Marine Air JAIRA Riding Club on Port Island in Kobe to have my first horse riding experience in Japan.  As it has been years since I have mounted a horse, it took a little time to get acclimated to the height of the thoroughbred.  However once I was in the saddle, everything went smoothly as I was taught the basics in my introductory lesson.

For as little as 2,000 yen ($20), one can enjoy a horse riding lesson with a trained professional at JAIRA's state-of-the-art facility.  As all lessons are conducted on a "reservation only" basis, be sure to make your appointment in advance.

1ヶ月に渡り続いていた梅雨も終わりを迎え、この週末には梅雨明けが宣言されました。ビーチは人で埋め尽くされるだろうと予想した僕は、ビーチバレー大阪カップ 中之島大会の最終日を観戦することでビーチを堪能することにしました。

ビーチバレー大阪カップ 中之島大会が行われた場所は、普段は何もないため、主催者はビーチバレーのコートを作るためにたくさんの砂を運び込み、さらに観客のためのスタンドも作らなければならなかったようです。何もないところに、こんなビーチバレーコートが良く出来たものです。

次に太陽の下で楽しんだのは、神戸ポートアイランドにある神戸マリンピア JAIRA 乗馬クラブでの乗馬です。これが、僕にとって日本で初めての乗馬となりました。最後に乗馬をしてからもう何年も経っているので、サラブレッドの高さになれるのに少し時間がかかってしまいましたが、一度馬に乗ってしまうと、入門レッスンで教わった基礎の通り、スムーズに乗ることが出来ました。

ここでは、1人たった2,000円で乗馬のレッスンを楽しむことができます。レッスンは全て予約制となっていますので、前もってのご予約するようお願いします。

Happy 4th of July 【祝】７月４日 アメリカ独立記念日

Yesterday marked for the first time for me to attend the Kobe Club's annual 4th of July BBQ Pool Party celebrating America's independence from England 234 years ago.  Even though the Kobe Club is a membership only club that has been in existence since the late 1860s, the club had a special offer for non-members of the foreign community to partake in the club's 4th of July festivities.

With an American style BBQ along with a three piece jazz band to add ambience, many of the party attendees enjoyed lounging around and swimming in the pool to cool off from a hot and humid summer Sunday afternoon.

After the conclusion of the BBQ party, I stopped by the Nu Chayamachi shopping district located right in the heart of Osaka to see none other than myself displayed as the infamous Yukichi Fukuzawa, who is best represented by being the face of the 10,000 yen ($100) note.  Referring to the last picture in the series, it is amazing how a little make-up and a wig can turn a fairly young westerner into an over 60 year old Japanese.  Yes, believe it or not, that is really me!

昨日、神戸外国倶楽部主催のBBQプールパーティー（２３４年前にアメリカがイギリスから独立したことをお祝いするもの）に初めて参加してきました。神戸外国倶楽部は１８６０年代後半から存在する唯一の会員制のクラブですが、７月４日のフェスティバルのみ外国人コミュニティーの非会員でも特別に参加することができます。

ジャズバンドが良い雰囲気を作り出すアメリカンスタイルのBBQと共に、多くの参加者はのんびり楽しみ、プールで泳ぎ蒸し暑い夏の日曜の午後から解放されていました。

BBQパーティーの後、ほかならぬあの有名な福沢諭吉に扮した自分がディスプレイされているのを見るため大阪の中心にあるNu 茶屋町に立寄ってきました。最後の写真についてですが、少しの化粧とウィッグでまだ若い部類に入る西洋人が６０歳以上の日本人に化けてしまえることは驚きです。信じるも信じないも、あれはほんとに僕 なんです！！

JAIRA Horse Riding Club Party JAIRA乗馬クラブのパーティー

On June 6, I hosted a party at the Kobe Marine Air JAIRA Horse Riding Club located close to the Kobe Airport on Port Island. After all was said and done, over 120 people came out to experience a perfect spring evening with one of nature's most elegant creatures. With wine provided by Estate Wines and food provided by Tooth Tooth, both of which are Kobe-based, attendees were able to enjoy Kobe like no other.

In addition to the fine wine and food, Shobun Setsu was on hand to exhibit his skill in calligraphy with many guests taking home a nice souvenir. However, the evening's main event belonged to the 20 or so horses housed on JAIRA's grounds with participants having the chance to get up and close with the magnificent animals; plus seeing JAIRA's own instructors perform a few equestrian jumps for the crowd in JAIRA's new state-of-the-art facility.

As the horse riding club just opened last year, it is truly a sight to see. With ponies also housed at the club, I suggest anyone visiting Kobe or living in the area to check out the Kobe Marine Air JAIRA Horse Riding Club.

6月6日、私は、神戸空港からほど近いポートアイランドにある神戸マリンエアJAIRA乗馬クラブのパーティーを主催しました。結局、120人以上ものゲストが、自然が産んだ最も優美な動物のひとつである馬とともに究極の春の夕べを楽しもうと同クラブを訪れました。神戸に拠点を置いている、エステートワインズご提供のワインにトゥーストゥースご提供の料理も手伝って、出席者は他ではなかなか味わえない"神戸"を楽しむことができました。

おいしいワインと料理に加え、書働家の薛 翔文（Setsu Shobun）さんによる色紙やポストカードへの書でのメッセージ書きが行われ、多くの参加者が列を作り、彼の書を求め、またとない手土産としてそれを家に持ち帰りました。しかしながら、日曜日のメインイベントはJAIRAに属する20頭ばかりの馬であることを語らなければなりません。なんとJAIRAのグラウンドで、参加者がこのすばらしい動物、接近したりできるというチャンスがあったのです。さらに、JAIRAに所属する指導者によって、観客にむけて、JAIRAの最先端の施設内で、少しではありましたが、馬術のうちのひとつであるジャンプの披露がありました。

昨年オープンしたばかりの乗馬クラブですが、本当に見ごたえあります。ポニーも同クラブに属しており、これもまた圧巻です。神戸に訪れるかた、同地域にお住まいのかたがたは是非、神戸マリンエアJAIRA乗馬クラブをお確かめになってください。私までお問い合わせいただいてもけっこうです。

La Suite Kobe ラ・スイート神戸

On April 9, I had my first opportunity to experience one of the newest hotels in Kansai, La Suite Kobe.  Conveniently located along the oceanfront in Haborland, which is just a 15 minute walk from the center of Kobe, La Suite Kobe is what I would consider a boutique hotel.  The one element that stands out is the fact that all of the rooms at La Suite Kobe are as the hotel name mentions - suites.  One does not need to worry about being stuck in a cramped room while staying at the hotel.  Peace of mind and extravagance at its finest.

With exquisite views of the ocean and surrounding landscape, I definitely recommend all of you who are in the vicinity to experience living in the lap of luxury at one of the newest editions to the hotel industry in Kansai.  

4月9日、関西の最も新しいホテルのひとつであるラ・スイート神戸を初めて訪問する機会を得ました。ハーバーランドの海岸通り沿いの便利な場所に位置し、神戸の中心地から徒歩で約15分くらいのところにあり、ラ・スイート神戸はブティックホテルという感じがします。今回ひとつ目立つ要素は、ラ・スイート神戸のすべての部屋がホテルの名前が表すようにスイートルームを意識して設計されているということです。ホテルに滞在中、狭苦しい部屋に押し込められる心配する必要もありません。

目前に広がる素晴らしい風景もこのホテルの魅力の一つです。近辺にお住まいのすべての人々に、今まで関西になかったホテルを体験してみることをお勧めします。

Oriental Hotel Opening Reception オリエンタルホテル オープニングレセプション

Last night I had the privilege to attend the opening reception of the newest hotel in Kobe, the Oriental Hotel. With the hotel open to the general public from March 5, I was able to get a "sneak peak"and experience all the hotel had to offer. Located right in the heart of Kobe, less than 10 minutes walking from Sannomiya Station, the Oriental Hotel's interior reminds me of Southeast Asia with its color hues, various plants, and furniture. The one aspect that sets this hotel apart from the other hotels in the area is the fact that the check-in desk is located on the 17th floor, which is the top floor of the hotel. With picturesque views of both the mountains and ocean, after one checks in, he or she can enjoy one of the four restaurants that are also located on the top floor in the lap of luxury.

In Kobe, the Oriental Hotel is marketing itself as the top draw for ambience and service. With the ever increasing competitive nature of the hotel industry, the Ritz-Carlton and the Hilton Hotel, both located in Osaka, are said to be the Oriental Hotel's competitors. For those residing or planning to visit Kobe, I highly recommend stopping by the Oriental Hotel. You will not regret it.

昨夜、私は神戸にオープンした最も新しいホテル、オリエンタルホテルのオープニングレセプションにプライベートで出席して参りました。3月5日のホテルの一般公開に先立って、ホテルが提案してくれるすべてのものを「こっそり拝見し」そして経験するという機会に恵まれました。神戸の中心部より右方面に位置し、三宮駅から徒歩10分以内のところにあり、オリエンタルホテルの内部は色調といい、さまざまな植物といい、そして家具といい、東南アジアを彷彿させてくれます。このホテルがこの地区の他のホテルと一線を画すところは、ホテルの最上階である17階にチェックインデスクがあるという事実です。山と海との両方を兼ね備えた絵のような景色を眺めながら、チェックイン後はこれまた贅をちりばめた最上階にある4つレストランのうちの1つで食事を楽しむことができます。

Weekend in Kyoto & Kobe 京都、神戸での週末

To kickoff the weekend festivities, I ventured out to Kyoto on Saturday evening to have dinner at the Shinkiro restaurant located not far from the downtown area in Kyoto but surprisingly in a part of town that I never knew existed. Within ten minutes by walk from the Shijo-Kawaramachi area, the architecture of the buildings in the neighborhood of Shinkiro take one back in time to that of ancient Kyoto. After getting settled in and enjoying the ambience over food and drinks, a 16 year old maiko by the name of Chika (shown in first picture above) came arrived as the main attraction halfway through dinner and spent a good hour interacting with us. As this was my first encounter with a maiko in a private setting, it was definitely an enjoyable experience.

With Kyoto situated to the east of Osaka, I headed to the west of Osaka to Kobe on Sunday to pay a visit to Yasuhito Fujiwara (shown in second picture above), owner of the Kobe Marine Air JAIRA Horse Riding Club. The horse riding club opened in May 2009 on Port Island in Kobe situated along the ocean with picturesque views of the surrounding Kobe landscape. With twenty some ponies and horses available for riding and training, I recommend all in the Kansai area to venture to JAIRA to experience horse riding in a state-of-the-art facility that incorporates not only design and functionality developed in Japan but also that from Germany as well. If planning a visit to JAIRA, please be advised to make a reservation for horse riding in advance.

お楽しみの週末行事の始まりとして、土曜の夜は思い切って京都へ繰り出し、京都の下町エリアから程遠からず、しかしながらこんなところにこんなスポットがあったのかと、初めて知った驚くべき街の一角に居を構えた「蜃気楼」というレストランで夕食をとりました。四条河原町エリアから10分以内のところにある、「蜃気楼」界隈のビル建築の数々は、古代京都を彷彿します。ゆっくり料理や飲み物をとりながら店の雰囲気を楽しんだあとは、「愛＝ちか」さん（写真上から第一番目参照）という名のメインの呼び物である16歳の舞妓さんが、夕食も中盤ごろに到着し、我々とも交流を深めながら楽しい時間を過ごしました。プライベートで舞妓さんと出会うのは初めてで、究極に楽しい経験となりました。

大阪の東部と隣接する京都訪問を終え、私は日曜日に藤原康人氏（上から写真二番目参照）を訪問すべく、大阪の西部と隣接する神戸へと繰り出しました。藤原氏は「神戸マリンエア、JAIRA乗馬クラブ」のオーナーです。この乗馬クラブは2009年5月に神戸の絵のような眺望を手に入れた海沿いに位置する神戸のポートアイランドにオープンしました。ここは20数頭ほどのポニーと馬が、乗馬と訓練用に準備されており、日本のデザインや機能的な開発だけでなくドイツからのそれもうまく合体させた、最新技術の機能を兼ね備えたクラブで是非関西地区のすべての皆さまに「JAIRA」での乗馬をお勧めします。「JAIRA」を訪問してみようという計画がおありなら、乗馬の事前予約をお勧めします。
