Nara's Festival of Lights 光のお祭 in 奈良

On two different occasions in the past week, I paid a visit to Nara, which is about 30 km (20 miles) to the east of Osaka, to attend separate light festivals.

The first festival labeled "Zenkoku Hikari and Akari Festival" had exhibits of 13 of the most famous light festivals held in Japan.  All within walking distance, one could experience Kobe's Luminarie and Osaka's Hikari Renaissance just to name a few during the five day event.

As the Zenkoku Hikari and Akari Festival came to a close, I ventured back to Nara a few days later to view Nara's annual TO-KAE Light Festival for the third time.  Having started back in 1999, the TO-KAE Light Festival lasts 10 days and consists of tens of thousands of candles lit and placed around the historical monuments and scenic landscape that encompass the city of Nara.   

As the TO-KAE Light Festival is one of my favorite light festivals, I highly recommend that you attend.  With special viewing exhibits made available to the public on Saturday, August 14, it may make sense to visit on the last day even though a large crowd is expected.

先週は奈良に行く機会が２度あったので、ふたつの光のお祭りに行ってきました。

１つ目の「全国 光とあかり祭り in 奈良」では、日本で最も有名な13の光のイベントの展示が行われており、5日間開催のこのイベントに来るだけで、神戸ルミナリエやOSAKA光のルネサンスを一カ所で味わうことができました。

数日後に再び奈良を訪れた際は「2010 なら燈花会」に行きました。ちなみにこれが3度目です。1999年に始まった「なら燈花会」。10日間絶え間なく何千ものキャンドルが灯され、歴史ある奈良の町をなんとも幻想的な雰囲気にしていました。

「なら燈花会」は私の大好きなお祭りのひとつなので、本当にお勧めします。最終日の8月14日（土）は特別展示もありますので、行ってみてはいかがでしょうか。

Christmas in Kansai

The month of December is a great time to be in Kansai. Especially in central Osaka and Kobe, the cities come to life with light showcases. Kobe is home to Luminarie, which has been held in the city since 1995 to commemorate the Great Hanshin Earthquake that destroyed the city and killed thousands of people in January 1995. To compete with Luminarie, Osaka hosts its own Hikari Renaissance along the river bank, accompanied by a gigantic yellow duck, that runs through the heart of the city. Of course some like to experience more than just lights around the holidays, which is why Universal Studios Japan (USJ) and its holiday-oriented performances and shows are always a fan favorite for residents of Osaka and the surrounding areas.

12月は関西では特別なシーズンです。特に大阪そして神戸の中心地では、光の展示で彩られます。阪神地区に大きな被害を出した1995年1月の 阪神・淡路大震災の何千人もの犠牲者に鎮魂の意を込めるとともに、都市の復興・再生への夢と希望を託し、1995年からはじめられた神戸ルミナリエが行なわれますが、一方で2008年から大阪の中之島エリアでも光のルネサンスというライトフェスティバル（今年は川辺に浮かぶ巨大なアヒルちゃん付き）が始まりました。今年は両方行きましたが、ユニバーサル・スタジオ・ジャパン（USJ）のクリスマスイベントにはまだお邪魔していませんね。
