Cherry Blossoms in Kyoto: Daigoji Temple & Nijo Castle

As the cherry blossom season or "sakura" season as we call it here in Japan is short-lived, I traveled to Daigoji Temple located in Fushimi, Kyoto for the first time to take in the picturesque landscape of blooming cherry blossoms.

After so many years being in the Kansai region, there are still so many cultural and historical places that I have yet to visit.  At least now I can mark Daigoji Temple with the adjacent Daigoji Reihokan and Sanboin Temple off of my list spots to visit.  

Nestled outside of the city center of Kyoto in Fushimi, Daigoji Temple, which is regarded as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO, was the location of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's cherry blossom viewing parties.  For those of you unfamiliar with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he was the creator of Osaka Castle and is known as one of the most influential Japanese in the country's long history.

Relating to the pictures above, the first four were taken while at Daigoji Temple while the last picture of the three Japanese koto musicians with the massive ikebana (flower arrangement as most of you would call it) in the background was taken while attending the cherry blossom night viewing illumination at Nijo Castle in downtown Kyoto.

Even if you are unable to make the trek to Daigoji Temple this year to view the cherry blossoms, there is always the fall for the tree foliage among the many events that are held there throughout the year.  As it is off of the beaten path from the major tourist sites, I am sure that I will be visiting this temple again to explore the rest of its treasures in the mountains of Daigo.

Even though I have been living here for more than 8 years, there were a few places listed that I had not even heard about! It just goes to show you that there is so much to experience that you cannot see it all even after being here for 8 years and counting....

Japan Luxury Travel Forum 2011

Late last week I took part in the Japan Luxury Travel Forum 2011 seminar held at the Hotel Granvia Kyoto.  Highlighting on how to attract high net worth travelers to the region, Ricco DeBlank of Sun Hung Kai Properties based in Hong Kong and James Samuel of Reed Exhibitions out of the United Kingdom where on hand to share their insights with the Kyoto-based majority crowd.

It was a pleasure to see Ricco again as I had not seen him since he left his post as the general manager of the Ritz-Carlton Osaka property in 2007.  After leaving Osaka, Ricco moved to Tokyo to open the Ritz-Carlton Tokyo hotel before coming to his current position as CEO for the hotel division at Sun Hung Kai Properties.

Following the talks of Ricco and James, a panel discussion was held with representatives from the Hyatt Regency Kyoto, Kyoto City Tourism Bureau and Iori.

I have highlighted Iori in the past on my blog here and here.  For those wishing to experience a traditional Japanese machiya (townhouse) around Kyoto city, I highly suggest one of Iori's properties.

ROHM: Illuminating Kyoto One Light Bulb At A Time ROHM：京都を彩るイルミネーション

When one thinks about Japanese electronics corporations, the likes of Panasonic, headquartered in Osaka, Sony and Toshiba probably come to mind.  But one must not forget about the semiconductor behemoth ROHM, which is situated in Kyoto.

Established in 1958, ROHM was ranked 22nd in the world in semiconductor sales in 2009.  Not bad for a company whose main product for years was resistors.  With its American headquarters located in San Diego and European headquarters in Germany, ROHM is one of the several global companies that call the former capital of Japan home.

Unfortunately concluding tomorrow, ROHM has turned its corporate headquarters into a winter light wonderland lasting a month.  Every year since 1995 ROHM has put on this light extravaganza, however I had the privilege of seeing this showcase of some 600,000 lights last weekend for the first time.  All I can say is that if you are planning to visit this year or in the future bring your sunglasses!  With nighttime events held throughout the month and a lighted park for the children to play, I would highly recommend stopping by ROHM between 4:45 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. for an enjoyable experience.

日本の電機会社といえば、まず思いつくのは、パナソニック（大阪に本社がありますね）や、ソニー、東芝などでしょうか。しかし！半導体をあつかう京都の大企業、ROHM（ローム）を忘れてはいけません。

1958年に設立されたロームは、2009年の半導体売り上げが世界で第22位という成果を収めました。これは主となる商品が抵抗器である会社にとって、めずらしいことと言えます。さらに、海外で活躍する日本資本の会社は決して多くはない中で、 ロームはサンディエゴにアメリカ支部、ドイツにヨーロッパ支部を置いています。

残念ながら明日終了してしまうのですが、ローム本社は冬期限定で1ヶ月間、光のお城に変身します。本社内の街路樹を利用したこのイルミネーションは、1995年から毎年行われており、私もこの度初めて60万個の光を見物してまいりました。感想ですが・・・今年か来年に来られる予定の方は、サングラスが必須です！！笑

イルミネーションの他にも、イベントや子供向けにライトアップされた公園などがありますので、16:45から22:00の間に近くを通られることがあれば、ぜひここに立ち寄られることをおすすめします。

Rokkosan Pasture & Cheese House 六甲山牧場：人と動物と自然のふれあいの場

One of the most famous mountain ranges in Japan, Mount Rokko makes up the backdrop behind the downtown area of Kobe. With Arima Onsen (hot springs) being the main draw to the area, the Rokkosan Pasture & Cheese House is a nice alternative for those not looking for a soak.  

Located less than an hour away from the center of Kobe, the Rokkosan Pasture is like a mini zoo with ponies, sheep, rabbits and mini pigs roaming around the grounds to interact with visitors.  But the fun does not stop there as you can participate in classes on how to make carmel, butter, cheese, sausage, wool, and pottery for a learning experience like none other.

With dining facilities on site and various animal shows and related events held throughout the year, no matter what season, escaping the hustle and bustle of downtown and heading up to Rokkosan Pasture for some R&R is recommended.  Except for being closed on Tuesdays from the beginning of November to the middle of March, the pasture is open everyday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for your enjoyment.

日本三百名山に数えられる六甲山。豊かな六甲山脈でもよく知られていますよね。六甲山は神戸市の後方に美しくそびえ立ち、見事な背景を作り上げています。六甲山地域は有馬温泉が有名ですが、温泉以外の癒しスポットをお探しの方には「六甲山牧場：人と動物と自然のふれあいの場」がおすすめです。

神戸の中心地から1時間とかからず来ることができるこちらの牧場は、子馬・羊・うさぎ・子豚などが自由に生活しており、まるで小さな動物園のようです。しかも、実際に近くでふれあえるようになっています。

ふれあいのみに留まらず、自分で作る生キャラメル、バター、チーズ、ソーセージ、羊毛、陶芸などなど、実に様々な体験教室が用意されています。なかなか他では経験できない楽しみがたくさん詰まっている施設です。

お食事どころは施設内に数カ所設置されています。また、色々なアニマルショーも開催されていたりで、イベント各種も1年中行われているようです。都会の喧噪から離れ、六甲山に登ってゆっくりリラックスするのもいいでしょう。季節を選ばないところも利点です。 11月初旬から3月中旬までは、毎週火曜日が定休日となります。牧場の開場時間は9:00〜17:00です。

Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Exhibition Center 橋の科学館

Where does one go to learn about the construction of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and other world renown bridges?  None other than the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Exhibition Center located roughly 20 minutes to the west of Kobe by train.

With the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, also known as the Pearl Bridge, finally completed in 1998, the twelve year project placed the bridge on the map as having the world's longest span of any suspension bridge at 1,991 meters (6,532 feet).  At a cost of 500 billion yen ($6 billion) to make, the six lane bridge is used by approximately 23,000 cars per day.

Highlighting the bridge's history and design, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Exhibition Center features a kids corner, 3D theater, and a wind tunnel simulator, in addition to the numerous visuals on display.  As the center is closed for most of the year on Monday, it is recommended to visit on Tuesday - Sunday to avoid any disappointment.

As one of the many landmarks in Kansai, I personally suggest you visit the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge during the late evening hours (as seen in the picture above) to capture its true beauty.

にのぼり、平均およそ2万3千台もの車が日々6車線を利用しています。

明石海峡大橋をはじめとした、日本の「橋」について学ぶにはどこへ行けば良いと思いますか？JR三宮駅より電車で20分ほど行くと、答えが見えてきます。

「橋の科学館」は、本州四国連絡橋の歴史、架橋技術を学習する場として設置されました。数々の展示物に加え、お子さんがクイズやゲームを通して橋について学べる「ちびっ子コーナー」や、200インチ大画面の「3Dシアター・ギャラリー」、シュミレーションを実際に見ることができる「明石海峡大橋40mの風洞実験模型」など、体験型のコーナーもあります。橋の科学館は基本毎週月曜閉館ですので、お間違えのないようお気をつけ下さい。

関西の観光スポットとして明石海峡大橋に行かれる際は、夜に訪れることをおすすめします。写真でご覧いただけるように、橋の美しさが夜空の下でいっそう際立ちます。

Lake Biwa: Japan's Lake 日本の湖と言えば、、、

Nestled 15 minutes to the east of Kyoto is Shiga Prefecture, home to the largest lake in Japan - Lake Biwa and often regarded as the best place to live in the entire country.  Having personally cycled around the circumference of Lake Biwa at 220 km (137 miles), I can say that, yes, it's a monster of a lake!

With its picturesque views, Shiga deserves more respect as a must-see destination for those coming to the Kansai region.  With Lake Biwa as the heart of the prefecture, an educational lesson as to how Lake Biwa functions in conjunction with the Yodo River, which connects the massive lake to the Pacific Ocean, is highly recommended.  However where can one brush up on his/her knowledge of Lake Biwa?  The answer is at Aqua Biwa and Lake Biwa Museum.

With Aqua Biwa situated in Otsu City and Lake Biwa Museum right next door in Kusatsu City, one can easily make a day visiting both attractions.  Catering to foreign visitors, Aqua Biwa offers services in English while Lake Biwa Museum can accommodate guests speaking English, Korean, Chinese and Portuguese.  One must be careful when planning to visit as Aqua Biwa is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays while Lake Biwa Museum is closed on Mondays.

So next time you are planning to stop by Shiga Prefecture, why not become proficient in Japanese limnology?

色彩豊かな滋賀県は関西でもっと注目を浴びても良いように思えます。滋賀県の中心となる琵琶湖は、数多くの支流が淀川となり、大阪港へと流れています。淀川との結びつきも含め、琵琶湖についてもっと学ぶにはどこへ行けばいいのでしょう？・・・答えは、アクア琵琶と琵琶湖博物館です！

自然科学の世界で、池などの陸水を物理学・化学・生物学的な側面をふまえて研究する分野を「陸水学（limnology）」と呼びます。滋賀で陸水学に触れてみてはいかがでしょうか？

Nara: The Land of Underground Power 奈良の地下発電施設

With 19 hydroelectric, nuclear and fossil fuel power plants situated in Kansai, Kansai Electric Power sure has its hands full.  Tucked in the hills of Yoshino in Nara Prefecture, which is famous for its exquisite views of the cherry blossoms in April, is Nara's lone power plant - the Okuyoshino Power Station, an underground hydroelectric power plant.

With the power plant and corresponding dam open to the public Sunday through Friday most of the year, those looking for an educational experience in energy and electricity may want to make the trek to Yoshino.  With other places of interest located in the vicinity, one can definitely make a day of it in the picturesque surroundings of Nara Prefecture.

関西電力は水力発電所、原子力発電所、火力発電所を合わせて19カ所関西地区に所有しています。桜景色で有名な奈良県吉野郡の渓谷に囲まれた奥吉野発電所は、関西電力の地下発電施設です。

奥吉野発電所では、発電装置とダムを日曜から金曜までほぼ１年中一般公開しており、エネルギーや電力について学べるようになっています。近隣には観光名所もありますので、奈良の絵画のような自然と共に１日吉野で楽しまれてはいかがでしょう。

Kobe: The Sake Capital of the World? 神戸は酒の都？？

Even if you are not a sake connoisseur, paying a visit to the Nada district of Kobe yields more than 30 sake breweries (for the complete list, check out this link).  Located 20 minutes to the west of Osaka, the Nada district produces 30% of the nation's total sake production.  Originated in the 17th century, sake brewing methods have been passed down from generation to generation making use of the Miya water that gives the sake its delicious and distinctive taste without the presence of iron.

Always a highlight for visitors to the region from overseas, now is a better time than ever to jump on the sake revival bandwagon and attend a sake brewery tour to taste test some of the great sake that this fruitful region has to offer.

Having been to Hakutaka and Kobe Shu-Shin-Kan to try their Hakutaka and Fukuju sake respectively, I can say with much confidence that you will not be disappointed.  However one thing to keep in mind when planning to visit the breweries is that normally they close at 6:00 p.m., so be sure to go early to get the most out of your visit.

『灘の生一本」で知られる日本酒の名産地、灘五郷（なだごごう）。日本酒ツウでない方にとっても、神戸の灘五郷の30を超える酒造メーカーは目を見張るものがあります（詳細リストはこちら）。大阪の中心より西へ２０分のこの地域は、国産の日本酒製造の30％を担っています。

神戸酒心館（しゅしんかん）と白鷹（はくたか）で試飲させていただいたのですが、自信を持ってみなさんにおすすめできる味でした！ちなみにどちらの建物も18時に閉まりますので、十分満喫するために早めにご来場ください。

Nara Forest Adventure 奈良フォレストアドベンチャー

Located about 30 minutes away from Tenri Station in the hills of Nara Prefecture, an adventure course like none other exists.  For those of you wanting to experience the Tarzan in you, I highly suggest that you pay a visit to Forest Adventure Yamazoe.  

Originally designed by Altus, a high wire adventure course company in France, Forest Adventure Yamazoe has everything from zip slides to rope ladders.  With the minimum age required to participate at 5 years old and height at 110 cm (3 feet 7 inches), pretty much the entire family can enjoy at day out in Nara playing in the trees.  

To avoid any disappointment on the day, reservations are required.  With the course open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday - Sunday, I would budget around two hours to complete the course from start to finish. 

For those wanting to experience a different side of Nara, I highly suggest visiting Forest Adventure Yamazoe.

奈良県の奥深く、天理駅から30分ほど歩いたところに、ちょっと珍しい感じのアクティビティーコースがあるんです。ターザンみたいに森を駆け巡りたいと思ったことはありませんか。フォレストアドベンチャー・山添では大人も子供もターザン気分を味わうことができます。

こちらのアドベンチャーパークは、フランスのALTUS（アルタス）というワイヤーアクティビティ専門の会社によって設計されました。命綱一本で最大高低差15メートル以上の谷越え「ジップスライド」や縄梯子「ロープラダー」など、多種多様な空中アクティビティーがそろっています。５歳以上、身長110cm以上の方なら誰でも利用できるので、ご家族で１日奈良の森林を楽しまれてはいかがでしょう。

せっかく行ったのに満員だった！ということを未然に防ぐため、フォレストアドベンチャー・山添は予約必須となっております。開園時間は9:00から17:00です。月曜日はお休みですのでご注意を。コースを廻るのに、だいたい２時間ほどみておくのが良いかと思います。

1300th Anniversary of Nara 平城遷都１３００年祭

With this year marking the 1300th anniversary of Nara being the capital of Japan, which lasted for 74 years until 784, I visited the Heijo Palace site on its final commemorative event day to experience this rich historical area.  Modeled after the capital of the Tang Dynasty in China, Heijo-kyo, which is an UNESCO World Heritage site, was Japan's first international and political capital.

In the pictures above, you can see the former imperial audience hall which is 44 meters (144 feet) wide, 20 meters (66 feet) deep, and 27 meters (89 feet) high.  This hall was the site of the nation's most important ceremonies including the accession to the throne of the emperor and meetings with foreign envoys.  In the second picture from the top, I had my picture taken with individuals modeling the appropriate attire of the time, and for the final picture, I took a snapshot of the closing ceremony concert featuring many characters represented during the 6 month span that the palace site was open to the public.  

Even though the commemorative events at the palace site have finished, Nara is definitely a good place to visit for a cultural and historical lesson like none other.   

７８４年に奈良に都が移されてから、今年でちょうど１３００年になります。日本の歴史を堪能しようと、平城宮跡会場を記念祭の最終日に訪れました。奈良時代に唐の長安をモデルにして建造された平城京は、国際的かつ政治的な首都でした。平城宮跡はユネスコに世界遺産に登録されています。

ページ上部１つ目の写真でご覧いただける第一次大極殿は、正面４４メートル、側面２０メートル、高さ２７メートルあります。大極殿は都の祭事の要所であり、天皇の即位式や外国使節との謁見などに使われていました。２つ目の写真は、奈良時代の貴族を模した衣装に身を包んだ人たちと記念撮影をしたものです。４つ目の写真は、記念祭の閉会式で行われたコンサートです。宮跡が４月末に一般公開されてから６ヶ月の間に活躍したキャラクターたちが注目を浴びました。

平城遷都１３００年祭は終了してしまいましたが、奈良はこの先も、文化も歴史も学べる魅力的な場所であり続けるでしょう。

ANA Crowne Plaza Osaka's VIP Party ANAクラウンプラザホテル大阪VIPパーティー

For the second time this year, I attended the ANA Crowne Plaza Osaka's VIP Customer Event Party held on Friday, November 5.  To mix things up, the party was held on the 5th floor terrace as opposed to one of the hotel's many banquet rooms.  Showcasing all of the restaurants at the hotel, I was able to sample everything from steak to seafood to pasta to dessert.  Hands down, the hotel's roast beef took top prize in my opinion.  

With a three piece jazz band creating the ambience, the hotel did an outstanding job in hosting the party from a presentation and taste standpoint.  With the next party planned for February, I am looking forward to seeing how the hotel can outdo this one.  

Conveniently located within walking distance from Osaka Station, the ANA Crowne Plaza Osaka is one hotel that should not be overlooked when planning to spend the night in the city or go out for a great bite to eat.  

11月5日（金）に、ANAクラウンプラザホテル大阪VIPパーティーに出席しました。私自身の参加は今年二度目となります。カジュアルに親睦を深めるため、ホテルの宴会場ではなく、５階のテラスを利用してパーティーは開かれました。館内の全てのレストランが紹介され、ステーキからシーフード、パスタやデザートまで多種多様なメニューを試食させていただきました。こちらのローストビーフが、私の中のランキングで文句なしの１位に入りました！

ジャズバンドが織りなす素敵な雰囲気の中、外観も料理もすばらしく、実に完成度の高いパーティーでした。次のパーティーが２月に予定されており、また今回のように、いや今回以上に満足させてくれるであろうと思うと、今から楽しみです。

JR大阪駅から徒歩圏内に位置するANAクラウンプラザホテル大阪は、市内で一泊したり、おいしい料理を楽しんだりするのに、絶対に見逃せません！

Kyoto: East Meets West 京都で楽しむ東洋と西洋

To experience the beauty of Kyoto in the fall, I paid a visit to the Mirei Shigemori Garden Museum located close to Kyoto University.  The museum, which is a traditional town house from 1789, was designed by the great 20th century Japanese garden architect Mirei Shigemori.

The tranquil atmosphere encompassing the museum was very refreshing as I was able to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a short time.  As the museum can be visited by appointment only, be sure to contact the museum for viewing availability.

Following my time spent at the museum, I dropped by Falafel Garden - the Israel cafe & restaurant - located 80 meters east of Demachiyanagi Station for tasty lunch before heading back to Osaka for the day.  With an at-home atmosphere that can't be beat, I highly recommend anyone passing through the Demachiyanagi Station area to make an effort to visit Falafel Garden.  With a new property just opened in Nara, I expect its second property to be just as popular as its first.

秋の京都を堪能しようと、京都大学近隣に建つ、重森三玲庭園美術館を訪れました。１７８９年に設立された住宅を利用したこの庭園は、昭和初期の庭師である重森三玲により見事に作り上げられました。

落ち着いた雰囲気に包まれた美術館は、日ごろの忙しさをつかの間忘れさせてくれます。見学の際は予約必須になりますので、必ず事前にご連絡ください。

庭園見学の後、Falafel Garden（ファラフェルガーデン）へ足を運びました。出町柳駅から８０メートル東にあるこのイスラエルカフェ・レストランは、大阪へ帰る前においしいランチをいただくのに最適です。家庭的な暖かさに満ちた空間はとても心地よく、出町柳駅に立ち寄ることがあれば、ぜひ行かれることをおすすめします。別店舗が奈良にもオープンしたばかりで、こちらも京都店に負けない人気のお店になるのではないでしょうか。

The Midosuji Gourmet Festival Comes to a Close

After 10 weeks of preparation, the inaugural Midosuji Gourmet Festival was finally held just over a week ago.  Marked by rain on the first and second day, things did not start out as we would have hoped but with the weather clearing up for the finale on Sunday, roughly 8,500 people showed up to enjoy the various international cuisine and entertaining stage performances.

As you can see in the first picture above, even the mayor of Osaka, Kunio Hiramatsu, came out on Sunday to enjoy the event's festivities with the rest of the community.  Also pictured above are snapshots  of the beer on tap from the beverage tent and Texas BBQ sandwiches prepared by none other than Hide Kanai of Hiday's Texas BBQ.

If we would have had three days of picture perfect weather, who knows how many people would have attended the event.  Hopefully we can give it another go next year!

10週間の準備期間を経て、初の開催となりました「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」が無事終了し、ちょうど1週間が過ぎました。初日・二日目と雨に祟られ、私達が思ってもみなかった事態となりましたが、お陰様で最終の日曜日は快晴に恵まれ、オープン前より多くのお客様が出店ブースに列を作られました。当日はおよそ8500人の人々が来場され、国際色豊かな食事や様々なパフォーマンスのステージを楽しんでいただきました。

上にある1枚目の写真をご覧ください。大阪市の平松邦夫市長も日曜日にお見えになられ、ご来場の皆さんと一緒にイベントを楽しまれました。次の写真は飲料ブースでの生ビール販売の様子、そして豪快にBBQサンドを調理しているのは、ほかならぬ”Hiday's Texas BBQ”の金井ヒデさんです。

Midosuji Gourmet Festival: The Countdown Has Begun!「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」のカウントダウンがスタート！！

In less than 10 days, the inaugural Midosuji Gourmet Festival that JD CREATIONS is producing will have breathed its first breaths of life.  This is without a doubt the largest scale event that my company and I have undertaken in our short history.  In the limited time that we have had to put this event together (10 weeks), we have come a long way.  With an elite organizing committee and strong supporting cast, this event will be something special and hopefully something to build on for future years, ideally as an annual event in Osaka.

With Osaka's own Midosuji Kappo (formerly the Midosuji Parade) event being held adjacent to the Midosuji Gourmet Festival on Sunday, October 10, the epicenter of the city will come to life like it has never before.  Last year alone, over 400,000 people attended the Midosuji Kappo event, which lasts only four hours.  With the Midosuji Gourmet Festival held in conjunction with the Kappo event, who knows how many people will come for the festivities this year!  One thing for sure is that after the Kappo event finishes, the Midosuji Gourmet Festival will still be going on with delicious food, beverages, and stage performances galore until late in the night! 

If you will be in town during October 8th thru 10th, make an effort to get Nakanoshima Park located right next to city hall in Yodoyabashi.  It would be a pleasure to have you at this inaugural event! 

JDクリエーションズが手がけている「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」の開催まで、残すところ10日を切りました。今回のイベントは、今までのものより明らかに規模が大きいのにも関わらず、わずかな準備期間（たった10週間）しかなかったのですが、なんとかここまでやってきました。実行委員のメンバーとその他のイベントに携わってくださっている方々のご協力もあって、「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」は特別なイベントになると思っております。そして、今後も末長く大阪の恒例イベントとなってくれることを願っています。

「御堂筋パレード」として長年親しまれてきた大阪のイベントは、現在「御堂筋kappo」とその名前を変え開催され続けています。今年は、10月10日（日）に開催されるこの「御堂筋kappo」と「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」で、大阪の中心が今までにない程盛り上がってくれることでしょう。開催時間は4時間の「御堂筋kappo」ですが、昨年はなんと40万人もの人が訪れたそうです。「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」も同時に行われる今年は、一体どれくらいの人が訪れるのでしょうか！？「御堂筋kappo」が終わっても私たちのイベントはまだしてますので、食べて飲んで、パフォーマンスを楽しみに来てください。

「御堂筋ぐるめフェス」は、淀屋橋駅下車すぐの中之島公園（市役所南側エリア）で10月8日〜10日まで開催します。みなさん、是非お越しください！！
